Six RAF fighter pilots flew their Jaguar planes 700 miles to the US Aviano air base last weekend for a skiing weekend in the Dolomites, according to this report in today's Sun newspaper.
The cost of the trip is estimated at £30,000 in fuel and accommodation, all paid by the taxpayer and classed as an "official training exercise", according to the paper.
Any comments?

They've got to fly to keep in training, so why not go somewhere where the can indulge an interest? Especially to engage in a sport which demands balance, reactions, etc, and keeps them in good shape? Good luck to 'em: we ask them to fly missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc - there's got to be some compensation.

I don't mind them flying to Italy or anywhere else, but they didn't have to join, so they can't really use their duties in nasty places as a justification.

The fact that the report came from the Sun should allow for a pinch of salt, surely? They are not averse to a slight bit of exaggeration now and again.....

Pretty sure that the Jaguar has the usual fast-jet thing - an external fuel tank converted into a baggage pod. Capacious. See the top left image on this page.

I think the fact that the Sun article is from a disgruntled ground crewman says it all, really. Clearly a very large case of sour grapes, methinks....

My cousin was ground crew for 18 years and managed to get into the back seat for "special training" missions such as these, perhaps the disgruntled crewman is just too fat to fit in a jet, start getting into shape and less moaning.
