Hi all
Looking at sorting summer holidays out and wife has suggested going to Austria again in the summer. A couple of years ago we spent a week in mayrhofen followed by a week in Zell am See. We had a great time in both places - really was one of the best summer holidays ever. We drove from Scotland and will most likely do so again.
Rather than go back to same places I wondered if there are any other places we should consider? Taking my 19 year old daughter and 15 year old son. Like being quite active and a lively resort. Visited area47 last time round which was great.

Ski resorts you get a lot of day time noise ..construction work… check if resort is building any new lifts or Hotels ..

How about Maria Alm for the Hochkonig region or Ellmau/Westerndorf for the Wilderkaiser region??

@jimmybog, visited Maria Alm a couple of times during the summer - lovely town although it was pretty quiet when we visited. Will look into the Wilderkaiser region

Spent a few days in Grundlsee last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it was a bit on the quiet side in the evenings. I’d thoroughly recommend the Carinthia region in the south. Plenty of lakes and mountains and, if you want stay somewhere a bit livelier, you could base yourselves in Villach or Klagenfurt. Wider afield, and into northern Italy, I’d recommend Trento and Bolzano in the South Tyrol or anywhere around Lake Garda.

The SkiWelt is great in summer, especially for younger kids. Loads of activities on the mountains and the swimming at Ellmau is very good. Horses in Going are highly rated if wife/daughter like that sort of thing.

Coming back from further afield we had a few days at Heiligenblut last summer, lovely place and combined with the HochAlpineStrasse well worth a visit.

It really does depend on what sort of holiday you prefer. Non winter sports places can be very good, as mentioned the Salzkammergut or Carinthia has some really nice lakes too. For more typical mountain areas, the Montafon area is nice, not quite as far a drive as some places, has a good mixture of lower and higher mountains, even if you are not into walking up them there is the Hochalpenstrasse over to Galtür and plenty of typical Austrian villages. I have been to the Stubaital a number of times, plenty of great walking of all types (the Wilder Freiger from the Nürnburger Hütte is a great walk though not sure of the current state of the glacier, it used to be very straight forward) and there is the skiing area at the end of the valley, though I dont think glaciers full of ski paraphernalia are that nice in summer, also very easy to get to Innsbruck if the weather is poor. If you want to stay in any of the huts it really is worthwhile joining the Austrian Alpine Club (there is a British section) makes it a lot cheaper plus there is the mountain rescue insurance included.
