Hi, does anyone have relatively snowsure suggestions for a week's European skiing starting from around 8 December?
I was thinking possibly Tignes/Val d'Isere or Cervinia? Our priorities are to ski lots of varied pistes and rack up extensive mileage. We are comfortable skiing all pisted runs and easy off-piste.
We don't know Austria at all, and it seems like quite a lot of bus travel between hills is involved, though would also be open to suggestions.
Have skied Val Thorens and enjoyed it a lot, but worry slightly that at this time of season it will get crowded with people coming over from Meribel and Courchevel if the snow is poor at lower altitudes.

Ischgl would be an option, assuming you stay in the village not a bus in sight. The resort is due to open on 22nd November and a quick look at the webcams seems to suggest that there is enough snow to ensure that it will open on time. Currently the snow conditions seem better further west, certainly the area around Zermatt has had a lot of early season snow. I would have thought it best to wait a week or two to see how the weather pans out before making a decision

Actually a question - does anyone know what pistes are likely to be open in Zermatt this weekend? I'm down there Saturday and Sunday, i see there'll be lots of schnee, but is anything actually likely to be open other than summer skiing area? (which will probably be closed due to conditions, looks like it'll be lamping down)

You have Obergurgl in Austria (connected with Hochgurgl) which will be opened. No bus needed there, just to take the cable car in the morning.
If you stay in Hochgurgl than it is ski in ski out.
The ski pass covers Solden as well, with free ski buss connecting them (less than 30 min if I recall). In Solden you have 2 glaciers. In the last days all 8 lifts on the glacier were working, with 33 km already available.But they are supposed to open much more this month.
On the other hand, in the last week the lifts on Tignes glacier were shut down several times due to strong winds

Zermatt was closed today (Monday) due to snow and wind.
When the lifts reopen, conditions uptop will be epic (for time of year).
Should be 20-40% of their lifts open when the bad weather clears.
Plenty for a weekend.

I've done Ischgl (3x), Obertauern (3-4x), Banff (2 x), Obergurgl (2 x) early December in the past. All have been absolutely brilliant. All have a decent selection of pistes, and off piste.
There aren't really any buses involved with Austria, as the accomodation is typically within walking distance of the lifts in these resorts.
Banff requires a bus, but much better to hire a car, as its then easier to ski the big three pass area (Norquay, Sunshine, Lake Louise).

I have not seen anything saying Zermatt intends to open up anything further for this weekend - a pity as there is plenty of snow to allow them to do so. So on the Zermatt side it will be Klein Matterhorn (i.e. the summer skiing area) and Furggsattel down to Trockener Steg. On the Cervinia side it will be everything above Plan Maison and (from tomorrow) Testa Grigia down to Laghi Cime Bianchi. Conditions look good. Ignore the post above about “20-40% opening”. It is untrue and silly.
