Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Hire Insurance /carre niege

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Might be a silly question, but as I use all my own gear, its not something that impacts me, so have never thought about it.

People in our group are renting.
While looking at all the different retailers, they all sell damage insurance separate for around 12 euros per person.
One place advertises Carre Niege insurance that also covers damages to hire gear as well as the usual mountain stuff for the standard price of around 18 euros.

Now I thought Carre Niege - if bought it with a ski pass for example does not cover damage/loss to gear.

However, this rental place sells the Carre Niege for the same price as the usual places.

So does Carre Niege as standard inc. cover for broken/damaged skis?

I don't believe so, most people use carre Niege to covers recovery of broken bodies to a medical centre without charge and by what ever means necessary. I'm sure it has other benefits but I don't think trashed skis is the best way forward - I would take the 12€/p any day

The Carre neige doesn't cover ski hire theft or damage. Their specialist ski holiday insurance might easily cover it. I've just checked 2 sites at random and they do.

Does the retailer's insurance cover theft or just damage? as many don't cover theft or loss. You are more likely to lose the skis than damage them. If they are renting high end skis the insurance makes more sense.

If you take the retailer's insurance, then there is a lot less hassle to deal with (filling out forms, paying up front then claiming back form your insurance).

Thanks,
Kind of what I thought. Think I will swerve that ski hire company then!
Though I think people in the group should be covered with their winter sports insurance

As I understand it, Carré Neige would cover you for refund of unused ski hire if you are injured. But not damage to the skis. I have added insurance to Skimium bookings (was quite cheap) and was glad I had when a set of fairly rubbishy kids skis were stolen as the "replacement cost" was quite high. The process was a hassle, though, requiring reporting theft through local police - a mission, given their short opening hours. A very sweet but fairly thick young man sadly lacking in keyboard skills took forever to do the necessary.

Thats what I thought - but this is via PrecisionSki - so not exactly an unknown company!

I think the clue is in Carre + insurance (indicating a double product, Carre Neige plus an insurance product..)

Maybe Carré Niege is a different product?

Carré Neige def doesn’t cover hire skis as standard.

The “+” is also a clue.

Details, details...

maybe its a precision ski only product. In some sort of tie up with carre neige

Ideally would prefer to rent elsewhere (due to location), however 12 euro saving by only needing 1 insurance + this shop is the cheapest out of them all adds up to a decent saving. Especially for the family in our group.
I'll run it by them - at the end of the day, they have the most to save!
Trying to explain to them you keep the gear all week & only return it on the last day (unless you want a servicing) is another matter though - as they are used to returning to hire shop to collect & drop off everyday!
But they have not stayed at ski in/out before.

€150 euro excess though...there woukd be some regret at saving €12 if there was a claim for loss or damage. I would skip the carre neige if the party has good travel insurance and pay the €12 so I could just walk away if there was loss or damage

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Another clue is the excess on that insurance: €150 of the €750 insured.

I'm not sure what the wholesale cost of bulk-purchased new rental gear is, certainly significantly less than retail. Ski gear depreciates... pretty fast, so if the gear's been used more than a couple of weeks...

I rent surfboards a lot, and they usually offer insurance at additional cost, but really it's just an extra margin for the hire company. Breakage is rare, but the value of a rental fleet isn't remotely what it'd cost retail.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It seems to be the same broker, and same insurers, as the standard Carré Neige, so I would think it is genuine. The actual cost of adding rental ski insurance is probably fairly small - much of the headline price may go in commissions, marketing etc.

It's quite a sensible product for anyone getting rental kit - particularly for French residents who won't have travel insurance.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
we’ve used Columbus last few years. There are options to add extras to it which I think I have done - rental equipment, and gadget cover.

Also need to add search and rescue (even though it’s specifically ski and snowboard cover)- but even adding these things separately still a reasonable price

Annual policy also covered a range of other activities so we could use for our summer trip to the Alps.
