I had come to the conclusion a while back that I dont really like the atmosphere of the place, something too corporate and plastic, like a version of Disneyland for rich folk, even if there is often skiing here when none elsewhere. I suspect, given the weather, that I will end up here rather than the Arlberg or Kitzbühel for some pre Christmas skiing but only because of the paucity of snow in the Austrian Alps.
PS you might want to fix the title of the thread......

All big resorts- including Arlberg- have trashed the mountains. All of us who ski demonstrate by our behaviour that we personally think it is a price worth paying. As a skier and and an environmentalist I find that uncomfortable to write/admit but it is nevertheless true.
So @stanton you should not be riding if you feel so strongly.

@suec, I never pay for lifts so I am not a contributor to concrete infrastructure..and today was the first & last lift I will take this season

@stanton, but you make a living from all those folk who do pay for the infrastructure so you are as much involved as all the rest of us. I am a member of the Alpenverein and enjoy being in the more remote parts of the mountains a long way from any lifts but also enjoy skiing using lifts. Perhaps it is coming from a small bunch of islands where the mountains (such as they are) are very small both in height and extent, but the Alps always feel spacious to me, enough space for ski resorts without impinging too much on the rest of it (which has roads, huts etc anyway).

The Alps are far more developed than UK hills and mountains. Quite extensive upland parts of Britain retain a good sense of tranquility which can be hard to find in the Alps.

This https://wepowder.com/en/forum/topic/260857 is how much effort the lift company put in the ensure the resort was able to open today. Also interesting to see which resorts put the most effort into snow making.

So 70km open today. Will temps go up in the next week and if so would that mean a reduction in open slopes the week after? Looking to head out possibly on the 13th for the weekend and trying to figure out options.

I doubt that rain lower down will have much effect if any on the pistes. The lower pistes, which are currently not "open" , are practically all artificial, any rain will tend to compact the snow some more and will provide a better base when real snow arrives. The weather forecast beyond the weekend in fairly uncertain (isnt it always.....), mild early next week but then maybe colder but certainly more unsettled which means precipitation. The great advantage of Ischgl is that a majority of the skiing is high so precipitation at this time of the year means snow for a large part of the area.
@Redial, I have rarely seen places that open early season substantially reduce the amount of pistes they have open.
@Redial, as above, unlikely to need to close pistes. Artificial snow is very resilient.

Can anyone recommend reasonably priced accommodation for 2nd to 9th February? For 6 people. Ischgl has been the hardest place to date to try and find accommodation in

Ignoring the fact that Ischgl's very popular so you've probably missed the boat for the cheapest accomodation are you looking for "reasonably priced" for Ischgl, or "reasonably priced" for a cheaper resort? Ischgl isn't a cheap resort.
In the "reasonably priced for Ischgl booking this late" there's currently a 6 bed apartment in Bauril Toni (500m from the Pardatschgratbahn) for 2,495Euro (416Euro pp).
If you want "reasonably priced for a cheaper resort booking this late" then you're looking at staying either up or down the valley from Ischgl and driving/catching the free bus each day/booking taxis home. Driving means five out of the six of you can apres and eat out (while one has horrible evening). Bus run till around 19:30 so you can enjoy apres but not eating out in town after that unless you book taxi home (and a locker at the Silvrettabahn as you need to be out of ski boots after 8pm).

Thanks for the reply. Are taxis widely available?
Granted I am leaving it late but I looked a number of months ago and it was still terrible for finding accommodation. It's something I've noticed with Austrian resorts in general vs French resorts. They're not as widely available on the likes of booking.com, AirBnb , homeandaway etc. . Which is obviously a choice on their part, but is annoying.
In general the best place to book accommodation in Austrian resorts is through the relevant Tourist Office website eg https://www.ischgl.com/en. The likes of AirBnB are not popular at all, it is mostly family owned hotels and apartments. Ischgl is expensive (I suspect deliberately so) and it is difficult to book anything other than a whole week. There are buses up and down the valley so staying in Kappl etc is perfectly possible

You know it makes sense.

Yep, ischgl.com tends to be the best place to look (even if they have just launched a website update that won't work in the upcoming browser versions). Unlike some other resorts the accomodation search is quite good though, once you learn to work off the map (lots listed under "Ischgl" that's in the other villages).
There always seem to be taxis around, though I don't know how easy it would be tro try and hail one/just phone up and say "Can we have a taxi now?". I think most are pre-booked, but then most people will be booking them to get back to their hotel for their evening meals.

Back from a weekend in Ischgl, though no skiing today as all the lifts closed due to the storm. Yesterday was OK, even some sunshine, though no connection to Samnaun again down to the winds. Up high the snow was pretty good though a number of the pistes were getting scoured by the wind. Lower down hard / icy piste with a thin covering of powdery snow. As usual the home runs are not so good though unusually it was the part just above the middle stations with poor snow the lower section was OK if hard (few if any wanabe Franz Klammer's in evidence). Given the winds the avalanche risk seems likely to be high for some time to come.
This was the first time I had actually stayed in Ischgl, before it has either been day trips or I stayed in Kappl or Galtür, and it reinforced my dislike of the place. The skiing is good but I find the tacky Schatzi girls, table dancing, conspicuous displays of wealth etc in what feels like a cross between a shopping mall and a theme park very unappealing. St Anton has better skiing, better apres and is just a nicer place. I wont be going back in a hurry.

Arrived in Ischgl yesterday lunchtime, didn't bother buying a lift pass as most of the lifts were closed by high winds and it was torrential rain at town level. Seemed equally grim this morning so decided on a day trip to Innsbruck. Turned out that most lifts did open today but it's still heavy rain and very poor viz higher up. Will ski tomorrow and report back on how well the pistes have taken the rain.

Well I said I'd ski today and this morning the heavy rain in the town finally turned back to snow. But currently all lifts are closed due to high avalanche risks. I'm hoping some lifts will open later, I really need to work up an appetite for the Christmas Eve dinner.

Lots of fresh snow here today and the lifts were only open as high as Idalp and Pardatschgrat. All the higher pistes were getting prepped this afternoon so there'll be easy access to fresh tracks for anyone up early on Christmas Day.

Anton has much better off piste, but pistes and lift system in ischgl a lot better. Tacky can probably be avoided, though ruskies tend to bring race to bottom, via the top, when it comes to the wealth flashing.

Just came back from Ischgl yesterday.
Hard to tell re Lech\st Anton but I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Powder on and off piste. Some places deep. Tanking down when we left and more snow everyday this week. The only downside- which applies to Lech and St Anton too is if it’s windy (or after heavy snow) they will close quite a number of runs. But when they open...
