Austria (Flights booked into Salzburg) ski-in ski-out

Hi there

We have flights booked in to Salzburg airport on 12th Jan. Anyone recommend any ski in ski out hotels within a couple of hours drive?

Why ski in/ski out? The beauty of being in Austria is that there are a lot of ski areas in close proximity, usually on the same lift pass, with easy access roads, so you can drive to a different one each day, usually no more than 15-20 minutes drive.

If you have to have ski in/ski out, look for places called 'Berggasthof', there are some, but you may find you're not near the town if you want a wander in the evening. Or go to a purpose built ski area such as Obertauern and be prepared for no tree cover if the weather is bad.

Dash Zwolferhaus in Hinterglemm was near as dammit, good food and decent spa as well. Not cheap though! Also, you'll probably end up on a bus at some point anyway to get to the various bits of S-H.

To answer the original question Obertauern or Rohrmoos next to Schladming came to mind. Zauchensee it's a tiny collection of hotels might fit the bill. Hotel Berner in Zell am See as well.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ski in - ski out in the sense of some of the purpose-built French resorts is very rare in Austria, because the villages are generally real old villages that existed before skiing started. That is one of the great charms of Austria, as opposed to the more "industrial" feel of France. That said, there are plenty of hotels where the skiing or first lift is no more than a very short walk/few steps from the hotel. And another alternative is that many lift stations or ski hire places have depots by the lifts, allowing you to walk home in shoes (visiting one of the many hostelries for refreshment on the way.

Some ideas within a couple of hours of Salzburg:

Westendorf - several hotels within a minute of the lifts (and a depot right by the lift). Easy to reach from Salzburg and great links into both Ski Welt area and Kitzbuhel area (4 min bus to link into Kitz), making this a huge a varied ski area.

Lots of places near the lifts in both Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Hotel Kohlmais in Saalbach was nice and right opposite the Kohlmaisbahn. Also could stay in Leogang, which has convenient hotels but quieter.

Wagrain - several hotels near lifts. Nice and extensive ski area linking to Flachau and Alpendorf - indeed, worth looking at anywhere in the Ski Amade area

If you don't mind a smaller area, Zell am See is nice, although most hotels are a bit of a walk - there is a big ski depot at the bottom of the lift. Very close to Salzburg (and easy direct train transfer).

But there are countless resorts of varying sizes near to Salzburg, and all will have conveniently located hotels.

You'll need to Register first of course.

The issue is that the convenience of ski-in/ski-out can be a limiting factor in Austria. Firstly it reduces your choice of accommodation by as much as 80% and secondly it might mean that the location is great for skiing but not for much else. Also do you want to ski the same hill each day or do you want to make the most of the area? Most lift passes cover a range of ski areas, easily accessible by bus or car, but not if you're half way up a mountain to start with.

I agree a guesthouse near to a lift station is probably a better bet than a guesthouse on the mountain if you really can't face a bus ride, walk in comfy shoes or a short drive to a ski area.

There is the Ehrenbachhoehe at the top of the Fleckalmbahn at Kitzbuehel http://www.ehrenbachhoehe.at/index.php/home.html , that is ski in and out. I would have thought it is a bit remote from anywhere else though as the lifts need to be running to get to either Kitzbuehel or Kirchberg or you need a skido. Oberlech fits the description but it is a good way away from Salzburg (guess best part of 3 hours drive) and not cheap.

Here's a good compromise - Hotel Kerschdorfer in Kaltenbach is right next to the gondola and the bottom of the home run. It's a lovely hotel, big rooms, good food and excellent service (like most Austrian hotels). Super convenient for skiing Kaltenbach but your pass also covers the rest of the Zillertal so you can have days away at Zell am Ziller, Mayrhofen and all the rest.

Thank you so much for you replies. I understand that ski-in ski-out would in Austria would limit our choices and I am really grateful for your responses. I ski with a handful of friends each year and we have been in the Dolomites for the last few years and have had great ski-in ski-out in Val Gardena and Colfosco and we may end up back in the Dolomites (we don’t mind the 4 hour drive from the airport) I was just wondering if anyone on here had specific suggestions and great to see we have had some - thank you all for them. @huttohut what more information would you like to have besides knowing we want ski in ski out?

There are loads of hotels at mid statipn amd above in Austria. Limits the night life a bit though

@darbyrw, as the @Themasterpiece said, size of resort, extent of ski area, piste skiing or off piste/ touring, apres/nightlife, types of skiers. I was also trying to steer the thread back on topic and not descend into debate about the joys of Austrian valley bottom resorts that don't have the asked for ski-in - ski-out hotels.

As you've been to Colfosco we could assume small towns with not a lot of nightlife aren't a problem and lots of blue red piste skiing would be a good target for suggestions.

We stayed in Sëlva in March and skied around Colfosco. I can't think of a similar place in Austria, with the village altitude, ski-in ski-out and extent of skiing.

We've stayed at the Enzian in Obertauern years ago, which would suit. We've also skied through Rohrmoos a fair bit but never stayed there. Quickly googling that brings up the Hotels Moser, Schwaigerhof, Rohrmooserhof that look good.

Further afield there is Kuhtai, Hochsölden (stayed as a kid at the ski-in ski-out Alpenfriede), Obergurgl/Hochgurgl, Oberlech and maybe Zurs as well, Königsleiten near Gerlos.

You know it makes sense.

The Jenewien in Obergurgl is right next to the gondola and you can ski back to the boot room door. Not the biggest ski area or the liveliest resort but for intermediate cruising it's good. The home run from the main après hut on the mountain comes straight back to this hotel and there's also a little outdoor barrel bar just by the entrance to the boot room so it's well placed for skiing and après.

Most (all?) Austrian resorts will have accommodation next to the pistes.
You didn't say what you're budget is like or the size of your group.
This is in Brixen, sleeps 12, not cheap, 100 yds to lifts to the Skiwelt (large area, mostly easy skiing)

Hi. Thanks again for the updates. We are a group of 6 adults who between us are happy on reds (some of us on blacks). We are on piste skiers. We like the Sella Ronda style skiing but i understand this is not what we are going to get everywhere. Our last five trips have been Zell Am See, Val Gardena, Corvara, Val Gardena and Colfosco. We skied as a group in Zell am See / Kaprun and enjoyed it - if there was a ski-in ski-out option there that would be great. I have also skied the weekend in the Ski Welt when on a work trip but we stayed down in Worgl but that is not something the group would be willing to do. Lots of really lively apres is not majorly imprtant to us though if its available thats great. We tend to ski all day, have a few when we come off the slopes (if theres only one or two bars thats fine) and then enjoy a good dinner with wine. We are happy to drive to the Dolomites again from Salzburg - we have nice afternoon flight times so up to 4 hours wouldn’t be a problem.

I will have a look through the suggestions above and am really grateful for the advice.

Also this.. next to the KiWest gondola south of Kirchberg. I think you need the regional lift pass to use it as weirdly its not on the SkiWelt pass. But the bonus is a 4 min bus ride to the Kitzbuhel area.
It would be quiet in the evenings though, and the nearest shop is in Kirchberg.

We went to Obertauern last season (March) and were suitably impressed with the resort and ski area and plenty on hotels that are ski-to-door or at the foot of the main pistes. The ski area has a circuit (taurenrunde ?) that means you can take a route right around in either direction easily in half a day. High altitude area and a good atmosphere in resort (typical Austrian apres with some dancing on tables to europop!)

We stayed at the Hotel Enzian which is about 200m from the centre of the village - the boot room backs on to a blue slope (really is ski-to-door) that takes you the 200m in to a variety of other lifts. Excellent food, rooms and spa on the HB package too. A minor gripe is that for a week the ski area may feel small but there a couple of other areas in easy access (Mauntendoft 20 mins one way and Schladming 30 mins other direction). Runs are not the longest in the world compared to French alps etc but good quality and variety.

Plenty of other ski-in (or near as dammit) hotels in the SE area of the resort where we were staying

Transfer from Salzburg was just over an hour (no traffic) which meant we get an extra 1/2 day skiing on arrival day as we were in resort by 12.

If you can get 20 together there are chalets actually on the side of the lower descent piste just above the chair close to Schladming. Car parking too. Clubbing together cost us about £180 each for the accom.
