Poster: A snowHead

Has anyone got experience of renting a car in Santiago and the drive over to Portillo? Will need to pick up snow chains & would prefer winter tyres..
Thanks

Only going to Portillo?
If so, bus or private taxi.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes - we rented from the airport and drove up. Drive is fine if the weather is ok. It is busy with trucks heading over the border to argentina so they can slow things down and they do tend to close it pretty quickly if it's snowing

Thanks - in Santiago for a week so will manage 2 days skiing & figure Portillo is the best bet.
@Arno, is the road quite straight forward? Don't mind driving in the snow but would rather take a taxi if it's drive or die

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Alans deep bath, the Chilean 3 Valleys are closer if it's a short trip and the skiing is very goid up there
Don't want to put you off Portillo though because that is a lot of fun. As I recall, the road is fine but you go up a crazy set of switchbacks just below the resort which aren't terrifying but could be frustrating if you are stuck behind a line of trucks

Agree with Arno
Could also take train from Santiago to Chillan and then taxi from Chillan to the mouuntain.
Very different weather systems from the north.
Wait and see.

@Alans deep bath,
Peak season at Portillo is 7 days lodging only, but late season the hotel has a more open policy.
3 valleys is closer to Santiago, there are transfers to the resorts every day eg Skitotal, you can book the pick-up and drop off for different days if you want to stay a few days.
If you can stretch a few more days Nevados de Chillan is better.

Rented a car with Chilean in the end, cheap, refunded money for chains we didn’t need, no issues on drive to Portillo though no inclement weather to contend with
