Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
I'm researching resorts for my group's annual ski trip and I'm looking for some recommendations. There will be approx. 6 of us, going end of January / start of February (just before the school holidays). In the last few years we have been to (in chronological order) Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez, Val D'Isere and St. Anton. To get an idea of what we're looking for and what our abilities are....
- At the bottom end of ability - can cruise reds and tackle some blacks. The better guys are comfortable on any piste and have started venturing off piste with guides and will be looking to do more of that.
- Adventurous skiers who enjoy a challenge and like pushing our abilities, so not daunted by the "difficult" resorts.
- Cover lots of miles and prefer not to ski the same slopes over and over, so a bigger resort.
- Apres ski / nightlife is important (guys in their late 20's, some single).
- Ideally self catering
- Not too expensive but I'm good at finding good value in places, i.e. Val D is called very expensive but we had a reasonably cheap trip there.
Val D'Isere and St. Anton were by far our favourite. The variety and challenge of the pistes really appealed to us, as well as the extensive off piste. A downside of St. Anton was the ratio of men to women! If there aren't better alternatives, we'd be willing to go to one of them again but we enjoy visiting new resorts.
An obvious one is Chamonix but the fact it is many small resorts making up an area is slightly off putting. What we tend to do is separate in the morning (good guys and shitter guys) and then maybe meet later in the afternoon for an hour of 2 skiing together. Is this easy in Chamonix?

Yeah on the M/F ratio - it's skiing it won't get any better.
3V is the obvious option - Val Thorens if you can bear the risk of whiteouts.
CHX you can meet up but you need to be skiing the same area as the only ones actually connected are Brevent and Flegere. Plus you are bussing or driving to most places.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

That's true but St. Anton was particularly bad. We did manage to land in Alpe d'Huez the same time as 300 Danish nurses, I think that has created unrealistic expectations for future trips!
Is Meribel good to base ourselves in? I think the risk of whiteouts would be too much in Val Thorens.

Ischgl?
Verbier?
Forget Chamonix - too fragmented. Yes, Verbier is fragmented but to my mind it lends itself better to the OP's description of their skiing strategy, it's better for access to the other ski areas, and the night life is better.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

How does Ischgl compare to St. Anton? I recall looking at accommodation there and it was hard to find self catering.
I think Switzerland is outside of our budget.

You'll need to Register first of course.

I'd suggest Morzine should be on your list. Have you considered Tignes?
Looking at your priorities, Val d'Isere is hard to beat.

@conor90, Chamonix is not many small resorts. The piste maps obscure the fact that the runs are very long. And that’s without adding in the top of Montets for example.
To be honest, from your request, Chamonix would fit very well. Choose an area - it has to be admitted that it is several areas on a pass - regroup for lunch.
Easy, no worries.

@conor90, Different vibe, of great skiing and off-piste. Lively apres and nightlife - someone will be along to mention the "sausage fest" that is Schatzi but it's ideal for a bunch of guys and there are other bars without dancing girls too
We managed to find a self-catering apartment about 10 mins walk (downhill) from Silvrettabahn. http://www.brandhof-ischgl.at/wohnen/wohnung-1/
Another option was https://www.apartment-ischgl.at/

Do some reasearch into where and when Danish nurses go skiing
