Poster: A snowHead

Just got my British Mountaineering Council magazine, and there's an advertisement for "annual European Alpine and Ski cover up to age 69" for £142, special offer 25% discount rate, supposedly, for purchases between now and 31 July. I don't know anything about the type or quality of cover, but maybe worth a look for some? Membership isn't that expensive.

@Grizzler, think I pay £35 a year membership, so if only joining for the insurance then it is in reality £177.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Membership of the Austrian Alpine Club (there is a British section) includes rescue and repatriation insurance see http://aacuk.org.uk/p-mountain-rescue-search-insurance . This is not comprehensive travel insurance but it does cover things like helicopter rescue whether on or off piste. Theoretically this and an EHIC card should cover most eventualities (but not theft of skis etc) but given that many clinics in ski resorts are private only it is probably sensible to take ski insurance too.

@Grizzler, I have BMC cover. To me it offered the best cover for what I wanted to do during both the summer and winter.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@munich_irish, Yup, think it is £47 per year and covers all the important stuff apart from rescue in the Arctic, Antarctic and above 6000 metres. I've been a member for many years now. Also gets you cheaper rates at many mountain huts.

BMC cover is pretty good, last time I used them it was for a winter climbing trip in Canada, but these days I'd be happier sticking with the AAC unless I was in the USA where extra medical insurance may be required.

Last renewal they gave me a 50% discount on the membership fee for renewing by direct debit.

What's the scope of the medical cover in the AAC policy ? I see from the testimonials there must be some.
