Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi all,
Thought I would post the globe winners form the FIS alpine race season this year.
Overall: Marcel Hirscher (AUT), Mikaela Shiffrin (USA)
Downhill: Beat Feuz (SUI), Sofia Goggia (ITA)
Super-G: Kjetil Jansrud (NOR), Tina Weirather (LIE)
Alpine Combined: Peter Fill (ITA), Wendy Holdener (SUI)
Giant Slalom: Marcel Hirscher (AUT), Viktoria Rebensburg (GER)
Slalom: Marcel Hirscher (AUT), Mikaela Shiffrin (USA)
I thought the technical events were pretty predictable from the start of the season, but the speed events were close all season and more exciting to watch. Feuz and Svindal were head to head all season in the DH and Goggia took the title by just 8pts over Vonn.
Some predictions for next season and beyond-
Will Vonn overtake Stenmark in overall world cup wins, by winning another 5 events?
Will Shiffrin eventually overtake Vonn's record (if she sets a new record)?
Keen to hear everyone's opinions.
I have written a world cup round up blog on my website here - http://batterseaski.co.uk/this-seasons-top-skiers/

@joeyg
,
Thanks for posting - interested in you views on a few things (apologies if these are in your blog as not had time to view):
1. How common is it for the overall to reflect the winners of the Slalom / GS (I am trying to understand if the 'technical' events provides more consistent / predictable winners vs speed events)?
2. Does Alpine Combine tend to favor more the technical or speed racers - or is truly for 'all-rounders'?
3. And finally, how unusual for there not to be any French in the list - are the Italians taking their place?
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Ozboy
, thanks, all good questions. See my responses below:
1. For the past 2 yrs, the overall titles have been won by technical skiers in Shiffrin and Hirscher (who just won his 7th in a row!). Historically however it has changes hands between the techincal and speed skiers. Looking at the results from 2000 for example, Men - 9 'technical' vs 9 'speed' skiers. Women 8 technical vs 10 speed skier. I think over time we have seen skiers become heavily specialised into technical and speed skiers, whereas in the past skiers would enter all disciplines regardless of there 'genetic makeup'!
2. Again the event doesn't seem to favor one discipline over the other. Looking at the result from 2000 there appears to be a 50/50 split of tech and speed skiers taking the title. It would be interesting to see if the organisers of the FIS have altered the event to favour a 'skier type' if there were a period of domination by one over the other.
3. I don't think there has been a dramatic decline in the overall level of the French skiers as a nation. Pinterault has taken the combined titles in 2014/6/17. He and Faivre also made the podiums of the overall GS season for the past 4 years. It can be easy to overlook when nations like Austria, Norway and Switzerland are so strong.
