There are some cold temperatures forecast for the Alps next week. Seems like a good excuse for a layering thread. What do you wear for skiing on -20°C days?
For me..
Top: Short sleeve base layer. Thin fleece (Patagonia R1). Down Mid Layer (Patagonia Down Sweater). 3 layer Goretex jacket (Arcteryx). Over sized climbers belay jacket over the top of everything (Simond, synthetic insulation).
Legs: Lycra shorts. Powerstretch tights. Heavy duty Goretex salopettes (Outaware).
Head: Helmet and a thin balaclava (Sub Zero Factor 1).
Hands: Fibrepile lined softshell gloves (Black Diamond).

-20 I'm happy with my normal laying just tend to close my vents. Mons Royale merino base layer, ortovox merino mid layer and airblaster shell jacket.

Top (Canada last January)
Cotton t shirt, thin long sleeve, fleece, decathlon ski jacket.
Bottoms
Skids, gym shorts, Decathlon salopettes.
Hands, mitts with additional liners
Feet , Alpinheat neoprene overboots
Head, ski jacket hood with insulation removed and held in place by goggle strap and a scarfe tucked under my goggles. Never wear a hat or helmet, I can't stand close fitting headwear when I'm skiing. Hate wearing goggles too and resort to sunnies as soon as it's warm enough.

in Are over Christmas / New Year it was around the -20s C and windy, and on the colder days I wore:
top - thin base layer (long sleeve HH t-shirt), a thicker power stretch top (mountain hardwear, think they call it a Zip Tee), goretex shell jacket not insulated (Marmot Randonee)
bottom - boxers, pair of no name power shield trousers - not insulated
Helmet - just the helmet, no other layer
gloves - Hestra Are gloves (basically their Army Leather Sastrugi but branded with the resort name)
feet - thin socks and great big ski boots.
I should point out that I ski hot, so although it might occasionally get a little breezy on the chairlift in the wind, I'm otherwise very hot and sweaty by the time I've done a few runs.
Oh, I also keep a buff, or other lower face covering handy for when it is really cold, and a spare woolly hat for when I take my helmet off

Not much different to the usual plan, just an extra layer and the thicker options of my cupboard....
Nike Procombat tights & long sleeve turtle neck (I have thin and thick options) or UnderArmour (can't remember if it's the warm or cold versions... but its the thicker tops!)
Merino baselayer jumper
TNF fleece zip hoodie (the technical quick dry ones)
TNF Gore Tex shell jacket + pants
Gloves - Black Diamond Spark
Merino buff

Generally around -20c in Banff last week. I was wearing everything I own, so thermal base, fleece, thin down jacket, thick down jacket and finally hard shell. Skiing in trees and bumps was ok, bitterly cold on open runs at any speed. Biggest problem for me was breathing cold air; I got quite severe bronchitis after 5 days even using a full face mask. This is the first time I have encountered the lifties checking people for frost nip before allowing them to go up the mountain. Keep your neck warm and try to avoid heavy exertion!

looking at some of the above, just the thought of wearing a down jacket whilst skiing brings me out in a sweat! Although having said that, I do have a lot of my own "insulation" to keep we warm.

For really cold days, nothing beats a Rab gillet over a couple of thin fleeces.
Hestra mitts are pretty much essential kit when it's that cold.

The warmer you keep your core (torso), the less likely you are to have cold extremities. So I was told.
Your mileage (circulation) may vary.

Having skied in the US NE ...the coldest was Cannon -30 ...it persuaded me to buy a pair of heated under-glove ...wonderful..but a full face mask is essential ...i nearly got frostbite walking across the car park. The rest ...long sleeve thermal vest, fleece, then a decent jacket ..compression tights and merino wool long ski socks...and a decent pair of pants.....no problems since then

... and have already lasted 4-5 times as long as my last pair of £40 gloves (which weren't that warm). They should last at least another 100 days use, probably longer.

-26C at 2800m in Ischgl today. I wore the clothes listed in the OP and was comfortable. I did take some 'emergency' mittens in my pack (and I'm glad that I did) although I didn't have to wear them.

Should be able to pick some up for £75-£80 ish. If you look after them they’ll last for years.

Depends how many days a season you ski , mine were showing serious signs of wear after two seasons

About -14c today. We normally take a baguette to eat on the slopes, but after today, we've decided the layer we need to tomorrow is a stone and slate mountain chalet for a long lunch.
