Just wondering if anyone is driving to the alps or leaving Alps right now (La Rosiere area), we are due to leave Newcastle tomorrow morning to drive to Dover then overnighting in Reims, making final journey from Reims to La Rosiere on Sunday, are driving conditions really bad, only seen the horror stories on the news but not a lot for France
As it is a company car we are not allowed to put winter tyres on (classed as performance modification) but we do have decent snow chains.

We just arrived in Morzine [ were supposed to be flying out this morning from Bristol but, knowing the flight was never going to go we loaded the car up.
no prob with journey- worst bit was getting down M4 form South Wales to Swindon.
Only hold up was 3.5 hours stationary about 30 miles from Geneva just before the tunnels due to a lorry accident and the Q not being allowed to form in the tunnels.
Glad we got here as ,apparently, it has been carnage in Geneva today with flights being diverted all over the place

I agree they class it as a modification to how the car handles (reduces stopping distance) and as it is a lease company car not much I can do - only asked as I thought it was a no brainer since they cleared us to take it to the alps.... dont think I will check about putting chains on

migletski, yesterday we drove down to Dijon. No problems.
Today we drove here (La Plagne). No problems, though we did take a Google Maps advised diversion before Chambery to avoid a few miles of static traffic - it was a lovely route: D38, D921 and past Lac d'Aguebelette.
Not sure what the problem was, but lorries were going through in convoy.
For us the roads were clear all the way, right up to 1800.
Snowploughs were going through regularly, sometimes side-by-side on the A43.
But, it is going to snow a bit tomorrow, so conditions could be different.

Left Reims at 1200 today returning to Calais. There had been overnight freezing rain but all main roads were fine, I did opt for the southern route back via Amiens rather than via Lille which was 3 or 4C colder. Snowed in Calais about 5pm and there has been freezing rain here as well.

Bit of snow on the roads around La Ros/Santa Fe during the day today but all clear at 5pm - bit of snow on the road from St Foy station down to La Thuile, then tarmac fron there...

The French authorities were caught out this morning with the detail of rain/snow boundary (a couple of degrees made all the difference) so there was a big jam from Tour de La Pin to Chambery. From what I can see Sunday will be fine, you may need chains for the last couple of miles to La Ros if you are arriving after 2pm, but the forecast is for showers, any sun on the roads in between will work magic. It will be just another day in the Alps, Jeremy Vine and his listeners may make a lot of it. The rest of us will go skiing, go to the supermarket and then go to the pub!

@migletski, they are idiots if they think reducing stopping distance when it is cold, icy or snowy is a "bad thing". Sure, it could mean you drive a bit faster and brake a bit later but in all probability it just means you avoid running into the back of someone. Do they think filling your washer bottle with low temperature screen wash is a similar performance modification?
Apologies, not having a pop at you but this sort of stuff makes my blood boil, especially if it is put at the door of an insurer (I work for a slightly more enlightened one).

I honestly could not see the problem, I think they just have a computer says no to any "modification" and no license to use common sense / judgement - luckily the tyre shop were understanding and cancelled the order. Next time I will take my car and less people - I can do what I like with my car

@migletski, I would expect that your car's handbook describes the use of winter tyres, so it wouldn't really be a modification outside the manufacturer's specification.
My steel rims that I use with winter tyres are narrower than the alloy ones that came as standard but are still a size described as valid for the car so I don't bother telling the insurer.

10cm of fresh just to the North of Grenoble, if I didn't have to go out today I would stay at home. It doesn't look too bad on the autoroutes at the moment, maybe people are waiting till this PM when conditions are expected to be better?

Alastair, interesting your link to the abi.org.uk page further links to a document that states "Some motor insurers may require you to contact them to let them know if you do choose to fit winter tyres", but then goes on to list 75 insurance companies - from 1st Central Insurance to Zurich Commercial - and none of them has a "Yes" in the column "Do customers need to inform the insurer when fitting winter tyres to their cars?".

Very taxing driving this AM, had some idiot from Montpelier stop right in front of me for no reason on the steepest part of the road - just managed to keep traction and drive around - not sure he was going anywhere without chains after that. Much better in the late afternoon as forecasts with roads relatively snow free.
