 Poster: A snowHead

Hi
We are planning a long weekend for late March and are looking at both St Anton and Ischgl. They are both very appealing, we are experienced skiers but off-piste is not really a factor in our decision. Most important would be good conditions and having a variety of slopes.

Ischgl would be my choice. But then St anton is pretty good too.

I'd say Ischgl too. I think there's a general view that the piste skiing is better in Ischgl. Not that there's too much wrong with St. Anton, of course.

If it's on-piste variety you're after, then Ischgl all the way. Huge variety, some nice long runs and excellent lift system. And of course there's the legendary apres (avoid Schatzi bar and Trofana Alm - go to Niki's Stadl and the Kitzloch, which are near each other)
St Anton's pistes are busy and icy IME - I'd say it's better for off-piste.

Perhaps a stupid question but will the slopes for Ischg and St Anton be less busy on a Saturday or Sunday? Logic being that people are departing, arriving etc. from/to resort

Flip a coin, go for the best deal you can get - both as good as each other IMHO, better skiing in Stuben/Lech/Zurs/Warth/Rendl than the specific slopes above St Anton.

Saturday is always quiet.
Watch out for the last weekend, 30 March-2 April is the Easterweekend, which will not be quiet at all

Ischgl has better piste skiing but I’ve failed to ‘connect’ with the town itself - no real reason why but just seems a collection of 4/5 star hotels rather than a traditional village that has evolved into a ski resort. I much prefer the overall St Anton experience despite some of the on piste conditions. St Anton is better linked to its neighbouring resorts too.

Well Ischgl certainly has a lot of nice hotels but it's most definitely a village and was one a long time before anyone ever thought of skiing. Admittedly its much bigger than when it was a farming community but you could say that about pretty much any skiing community.

One additional question - we would take the train from Zurich to St Anton but will probably need a shared transfer to Ischgl. Is there a good way to find a reasonably priced transfer?

Get the train to Landeck for Ischgl. Think you can get a bus from there. We used www.austria-taxi.at for our transfer from Innsbruck to Kappl last month. Could not fault them. Quite difficult finding cheap transfers mind you.

You could try Alpen Taxi which is based in Ischgl. I've got the train from Zurich a few times. There's a regular bus service from Landeck, approx. 8 euros each way. A taxi from the train station is about 70 euros.

I´d recommend Ischgl over St Anton at that time of year, although with this years snow pack they should both still be awesome.
There´s not really a shared transfer option to Ischgl, so if you want to do it cheap, then take the train to Landeck station from either Zurich or Innsbruck, and then take the public bus service to Ischgl.
If you´re flying to Zurich then St Anton is closer, and if you´re travelling on the train it´s easier too. The train from Zurich or Innsbruck goes straight through it (well next to it.)
Saturday is always the quietest day in resorts, so make the most of it.
