Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying first pair of skis - advice needed

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just got back from a week in Chamonix and I am done with renting skis, so I'm now struggling to decide on what skis to purchase. I like the sound of the Black Crows Camox and the Amplin Rockwell, but I was wondering if anybody had any advice on similar all-mountain skis? At the moment I ski 6-12 days per season, usually charging around on groomers and hitting little side jumps (hope to be doing more of this in the coming years) until the snow comes, when I'll look to ski anything with powder on it. As a result I'm looking for quite a versatile ski that is good at high speeds on piste, is quite playful, and is good enough in the powder. I'm 180cm, weigh c.72kg and consider myself to be an advanced skier. Would love any help provided as I'm a complete noob when it comes to skis, thanks in advance!

Atomic backland 102 are going cheap on Sport Bittl at the minute. I haven't skied them, but worth looking into at that price. My girlfriend has the old Atomic Access they were modelled on and they're great skis. Definitely playful and good in powder, but I couldn't comment on how they hold up at high speeds on piste as she's only used them in Japan.

It sounds like you are going to need more than one pair.

You may cover your bases with some Cham 97s but it sounds like you may need a second pair of piste focused hooners.

Used some Cham 87's as a single ski few years back in BC. Charging around groomers something around 80-90mm underfoot will get you chargeability with ability to deal with anything except exceptional ultra deep light snow as long as it has some rocker (which every single ski in that size now has).

What skis have you used / played on recently?
