Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

First Descent - The Stockton Wall - 22 Jan 2018

With the legendary Stockton On Tees Massif (aka the communal block paved/grassed area leading to our drive...) snow covered and in condition, it was time for a few very local turns and an attempt at a pioneering first descent of the fabled and infamous Stockton Wall Very Happy.

But really....Having cleared the drive and shovelled the resulting snow onto my would-be ski run on the day of last week's snowfall (18 Jan), a bit of grooming with the back of the snow shovel produced a pisted green run of about 30 metres. After two nightskiing sessions under the lights, yesterday (Mon 22 Jan) dawned cold and frosty - so it was time for a few turns before work.

While Mrs MA was happy to take photos from our upstairs window, unfortunately she didn't have a go Confused. I had thought it could be down to the understandable fear factor associated with The Wall - but it was more probably under the what will the neighbours say principle Embarassed . She doesn't know what she was missing!! Laughing

Years ago when my kids were toddlers, we had two little girls living down the street who were known to get out their skis when it snowed and ski down the street.

Cheers all Very Happy - especially for the safety tips.

In my excited, powder-fevered state I just needed to get out there - so completely overlooked the use of avalanche kit etc. In fact I neglected to even consider the risk of avalanche, crevasse and the fact that it was a no fall zone, so might have even skied with ice axe in hand...

I didn't even stop to consider that I was potentially not just putting myself at risk but also others who might have to rescue me.... rolling eyes

Or maybe it was just that I knew I'd be late for work! Laughing

And yes, it's off to Aspen next week. Already fearful that it might not be as challenging as The Wall... wink
