Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Why doesn't Zermatt hold FIS races ?

Curiosity got the better of me.
Planning a trip to Zermatt and started thinking why such a famous resort isn't featured on the FIS tour. Surely it must have suitable terrain for a downhill or at least a GS / slalom course and the town lends itself to host events? I don't recall ever having seen a race in Zermatt - is this so, and if so why ?
To broaden this out a little, which other well known resorts don't attract FIS races and why ?

I think the simple answer is that Zermatt doesn't need the business/hassle/expense. There are big financial equations involved.
The National is an FIS-approved race piste at Zermatt, and I think some significant (but not World Cup) races happen on that piste.
Edit: it seems that Zermatt is more active with snowboarding. They held the World Junior Snowboard Championships last April, and are staging more snowboard championships (Swiss) this April. It's true that very little ski racing seems to be taking place there - I did a search on the FIS site and couldn't find anything since 2003.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Verbier springs to mind - more into free-skiing.

Years ago, Zermatt's National had an in the village finish. They used to run a downhill from Blauherd down to town, but now that lower section is full of houses. They may still run some FIS races there occaisionally. I always thought that Aroleid down to Furi would make a great DH.
