Blood waggon off the hill in Sestriere last Friday. Local anaesthetic in heel then heel bone drilled through. Stainless steel bar then hammered through the hole ready for traction. Bones reset and put in traction with no anaesthetic. Smarted even more than when they pulled my ski boot off. In traction for five days. Not very comfortable. Op yesterday. Awful food, mainly beige. Hopefully home soon.

@Hurtle, @Frosty the Snowman, @T Bar, @pam w, thanks everyone.
Despite everything I'm actually still quite cheerful. It could have been much worse and crucially the surgeon sees no reason why I shan't be skiing next season. My cup is half full.

Janet did for herself in Sestriere, was very happy not to return there this year.
We were pleased with the attention at the med centre - where have you ended up?

@Val Desire, Susa Hospital, half way between Sestriere and Turin. Apart from the food and a lack of 'nice' painkillers, can't fault them.

@sequoiaborg, Should have done it in France . . . much better food and I've still got more industrial strengh pain meds from 2 years ago than I'll ever need:
At impresively hi-tech as it is, at least your Mechano is de-mountable, good luck on a speedy recovery. How soon will they let you go home and how'd ya do it [/mawkish-purience-mode]

@sequoiaborg, My sympathies. Must've been pretty worrying at the time. Hope that it's going well now, you sound in good spirits. Best wishes for the recovery phase, and hope that you get a good journey home and suitable amounts of sympathy, attention and pampering along the way.

Don't know Susa, but best of luck to you. I think the idea in Italy is that some aged relative delivers decent food a couple of times a day. Guess it's a challenge when you're not local.

If one thing is consistent here it is the breakfast. Two packs of Super Dry melba toast and the weakest coffee in Italy.
