Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche book recommendations

I have been to a few talks, done some rescue practice with guides and follow most of the avalanche/off piste safety threads on here but would also like a book to further increase my knowledge. Any recommendations please?

@leggyblonde, in the sticky at the top of the off piste section there’s a list of books.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Staying-Alive-Avalanche-Terrain-Ski-mountaineers/dp/1898573751/ref=sr_1_3?tag=amz07b-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1353944724&sr=8-3

Remains popular and very practical.

@jbob, read that myself as a total novice on the subject and found it great. The booklet that came with my Ortovox transceiver was also pretty helpful, it was basically a summary version of the Tremper book.

@leggyblonde, I think this one is a good option to have a look at -- Snow Sense: A Guide to evaluating Snow Avalanche Hazard by Jill Fredston and Doug Fesler

I have this one, a little more advanced but gives a really thorough background.

Big fan of Jon Oden's How to Adapt to the Mountain : https://www.amazon.com/Free-Skiing-How-Adapt-Mountain/dp/9163313138?tag=amz07b-21 - this is a more broad range book including first aid and mountaineering basics. He shares a lot of his stories and can be quite blunt about your options in rescue scenarios.

Tremper is without doubt good!
However, shameless plug for "Avalanche know-how" written in layman's terms by my oldest friend, Brian Farquharson Very Happy

Came across this today when searching for something else - could be of interest to some - all the profiling info is pretty standard stuff.
