As I've finally decided my knee isn't getting any better I've been to my GP who thinks its likely I have a meniscal cartilage tear or some lateral collateral ligament damage. Next stop picking an appropriate consultant (thanks to health insurance) who can MRI it & maybe arthroscopy.
Anyone got any recommended surgeons in the Surrey/North Sussex/South London area who are particularly sympathetic to skiers?
I know a lot of pro footballers, skiers and basketball players go to Vail for their knee surgery (it was where Kobe Bryant was accused of rape) but realistically I guess I'm stuck closer to home.
Any experience/war stories re the above also welcome.

fatbob, The only one who I trust is in Bristol, why do you need one close to home?

To be honest I'd be prepared to go anywhere in the country if it was to the best guy but until I know exactly what the problem is it seems like unnecessary hassle. If it turns out I can get away with a bit of a trim of cartilage with an arthroscopy its obviously a different matter to an ACL rebuild/graft

fatbob, It may be worth checking with your insurer, if you can swop consultants, once a diagnosis is made.

fatbob, my son who is only 16 has already had knee surgery due to football, and 2 weeks ago had dislocated ankle, also from footie, we have had great service at the JR (John Radcliffe) in Oxford, they have been spot on with diagnosis and really quick with MRI and cat scans last time they got the consultant to do a scan on a saturday for us. Can not sing there praises enough and we were NHS!

fatbob, my wife had her cruciate ligaments repaired after a skiing acident in Feb this year by Nicholas Morgan who operates, (literally) out of Princess Margarets in Windsor or the Nuffield in Woking. He is also approved by BUPA.

I know there not exactly surgeons but it might be worth (if local) talking to:
Tom Williams
Activ8 Rehab
Brunel House
Foundry Court
Gogmore Lane
Chertsey,Surrey,KT16 9AP
Telephone: 01932 568501
They are surperb physios, Tom is an ex-waterski racer and does some skiing (IIRC) He'd certainly know who to recommedn to get the knife out. They do work with the Maclaren F1 team as well.

fatbob, I know this is hardly in Surrey but I've had 3 ACL replacements done by Dr Jacques Lemoine in the clinic in Cluses, Haute Savoie. He has performed miracles on mine. Please PM me if you need any info

You know it makes sense.

Mine was done by a South African guy (he's been over here quite a while and it's a relatively understated accent) who does a few of the lower league footballers. Had it done in the Regency hospital in Macc. (Bupa). I had a meniscal tear, an eye (which he couldn't do anything about) and quite a bit of ACL damage. Very quick recovery, been fine since and I can't even point to any scar tissue. Unfortunately I can't remember the guys name but it was fairly short. I presume there's not that many specialist knee surgeons around so you might come across him. I'll see if I've got any bumph at home.

To be honest if depends on the level of injury.
If you're just talking about having a meniscal tear trimmed, it's pretty straightforward, and all you need is a competent local surgeon with low infection rates. A general orthopaedic surgeon should be able to do the job for you.
If you're starting to talk about ligament reconstruction surgery then this is a different kettle of fish, and if you can afford their prices, a super-specialist is worth seeking out. Most surgeons who work with professional athlete's don't come cheap though. At the very least you want someone who has a special interest in knees, and who regularly does ligament reconstruction work, rather than just knee replacements.
If you're interested then out of all the people that I've worked with in orthopaedics, there is one person that I would trust to operate on me, he is in Bath.

David Elliott is an orthopod working in Cherstey, Surrey (St Peter's Hospital). Not only is he a gifted surgeon but he is also a competent skier. As per Kramer's post, his interest is in trauma and ligament reconstruction surgery.

have you tried with a stem cell treatment? I had a terrible pain in my knee after a fall. I kept waking up with pain after an injury; just getting up from bed was painful. I had to have a knee arthroscopy surgery recently with Dr. Zanasi, I was really happy with the treatment. The recovery was really fast and now I can do my normal activities, as there’s no downtime with this kind of treatment whether or not you need sugery. I'd highly recommend him, this is his website http://www.spamcells.com/home/
Best wishes
Sam

Welcome to Snowheads samhughes1398.
An interesting first post. Resurrecting a 10 year old thread. And advertising a Private Hospital in London. Some of the specialisms rather fluffy - "semeiotic management"?. Claim can work on all joints. Claim 100% success.
This therapy is available on NHS at certain centres for specific restricted conditions. It is still experimental.

There was that guy offering free advice on knees who was accused of spamming.
This could be fried and served with hash browns. It could be served to malnourished people as a cheap protein source. It could have songs sung about it.
I would love it if someone grew a new nose on their knee from stem cells. Seems unlikely, like that mouse.
