Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

As I live in the Middle East I'm looking to organise some sand skiing in the autumn...
I would like to hear from anyone who has done it before who can offer advice.
My questions are:
1) What gear is suitable? Would piste skis work well enough or do they need to be fat skis? What about snowboards?
2)Are normal Alpine boots and bindings ok? I've seen some videos and a lot of people use touring gear... but I would plan on using vehicles to get up the dunes and then ski down them...
3) How difficult is it?
Any other insights and advice would be received with thanks!
Cheers!

@MancSkier
, it's been done for many, many years so fat skis not necessary. Useful? Perhaps...
The films I've seen had normal alpine kit. Don't use anything you expect to use on snow again...
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@under a new name
, thanks - that’s broadly in line with my thoughts..

Old kit you don't value too much. The main thing you need is steepness. Here's a video of skiing on volcanic ash on Mt Etna.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@MancSkier
, sand boarding with a jeep uplift is much less faff gear wise and just as fun considering the length of descent you will have

What does it feel like to take a fall? I suspect it would be hard on your ski clothing.

Sitting on an upturned VW beetle bonnet towed behind a landcruiser was the technique when I worked in the Libyan oilfield. Hope that helps!
