Well at least according to Ski Club of GB....

Val Thorens (60/70cm) has joined Tignes (35/80cm) in early openings, reporting an impressive 13 lifts open due to large amounts of early snow, including runs back into resort. Tignes remains restricted to operations at the top of the mountain around the glacier. Conditions however do not look promising going forward, with no snow on the horizon at all and a rising snow line, making it unlikely any resorts will now be opening in the near future. |
And there was me thinking that:
- Tignes has two resort level lifts and runs open - as opposed to only 'operations at the top of the mountain around the glacier.'
- Espace Killy may well be opening some lifts (as scheduled) next weekend?? (It's all looking nice and white - if a little thin in places - even the front de neige area of Val D is snow covered....)
- Regardless of links to Tignes, Val D opens on Saturday.

The foehn later this week won't be good so I guess it all depends on whether it cools down and snows from the weekend, or not. There is about the same amount of snow as last year and the year before for the same date. Montgenevre opened and so did a few Pyrenean areas. Courchevel didn't open this weekend despite managing a day last Wednesday. Les 7 Laux had to put back its proposed opening due to the thaw over the last few days.
Still it is only the middle of November, the snow doesn't usually hang around much before December.

Chaps! Don't be blaming the Club. Val Thorens' outlook is more international than Tignes. It plays the schmoozing game better and has numerous World Snow Awards to prove it. Nobody welcomes a schmoozer more warmly than the Club and that is all in the members' interests! Considering all the lovely press trips and the promos that VT fund compared to the meager offerings of Tignes and Val, it really would not be fair for the Club to report the conditions in Tignes as being as good as those in VT now would it?
Let's be realistic.

Excellent. A negative snow report usually brings package prices tumbling for those of us who haven't booked for Christmas yet. Even if it is fake news.

I believe that they almost always out out a report like this though. Doom and gloom gets the readers for whatever reason...

This is our car in Chamonix exactly a year ago. I didn't bother taking a picture last Sunday but there was maybe 5 cms fresh on the car in the morning and loose piles of snow all around from the prior falls. We drove down on snowy roads to around 800m.
Significant? Nope!
Encouraging for a heuristically challenged human? Of course it is!
