Hi!
Quick question I think @Spyderjon will know the answer to.
Currently my Kingpins are mounted for a BSL of 292, pretty much in the middle of the adjustment range.
Would I be able to use a pair of boots with a BSL of 280 on them?

The Kingpin heel length adjustment range is 25mm. However the jig doesn't mount the heel in the middle of the adjustment range. When mounted with boot used to set the jig length the heel can go 10mm foward and 15mm back with the correct forwared pressure adjustment.
So if your boot was used to set the jig length then it won't go down that much. It will appear that it will but the forward pressure won't be correct.
But you just might get lucky if whoever mounted them just set the jig to 290mm.
The important thing is that the foward pressure must be correctly set.
If it doesn't go then there's a couple of things you could do:
1. Remount either the toe or heel (depending upon where you want the boot line to be versus the ski's mounting line).
2. If there's only a mm or two in it you could fit these to your boots to extend the sole length:

Already got the marker boot adapter to use with the new boot (atomic backland - size 25.5).

You've got a big problem then as you cannot use the Kingpin heel adaptor with the Backland boot as the sides of the heel are hollow meaning that there's no material to get a proper fix when putting in the lateral support screws.
And the lateral screws must be used for support as there's a lot of load applied.
This was definately the case when the Backland was launched and I'm pretty sure that Atomic haven't changed it, meaning that the Backland is only for use in a full tech binding so the Kingpin and the Tecton are out.

The updated marker adapter works with the backland as far as I know. They added a screw hole that fits in the backland heel.

No it doesn't.
The original holes were for the TLT5 and the additional holes were added for the TLT6.
I'm 99% certain that Atomic have never approved the use of the adaptor with the Backland and its use would probably invalidate the warranty.
Strange that you'd want to use such a light, low and soft boot with a Kingpin. Owners of those boots are usually on the lightweight tech bindings.

Yeah, it’s just what I plan to use until I get a second lighter weight setup.
Interestingly, a bunch of folks here (Colorado) have been using lighter boots and skis with kingpin bindings, as they say the kingpin greatly makes up for any performance or control loss with the lighter weight boot and ski setup.

It's nothing to do with Marker, it's Atomic that have to give the approval. CEM was very knowledgeable re this when the Backland was launched so I'll ask him if there's been a change.

no, there is no change, atomic have categorically stated that their boot should not be used in the king pin binding, this information had come from the product manager for ski boot for Atomic Matthew Manser

Response from Atomic is that “Atomic does not recommend it”. Stated reason being the Backland isn’t suited for the Kingpin binding. No mention of safety issues, but not a full green light either.

no idea who gave that response, but can you get a name and and PM it to me, being as the response i gave was words directly from the mouth of the product manager i am sure he would like to know who within his US organisation is talking poo-poo
