Poster: A snowHead

Hi All,
I’m in need of some local knowledge. At the end of an amazing Family Bash, I managed to completely tear my Left Achilles’ tendon, and also fracture a bone in my right wrist! The leg needs an Ortho opinion +/- surgery & the wrist needs a CT scan.
VT medical centre were worse than useless, but the insurance company have decided I’m not fit to travel & can get fixed here. But where to go, who to see? Any suggestions/recommendations/warnings?
On a positive note the Snowheads community has been fantastic. I’ve been packed up & transferred from Kashmir to Oxalys, wheeled around, fed, plied with alcohol, and now they’ve taken my son skiing! What an awesome group we are!!

I think the hospital in Moutiers is now closed, so the nearest may be Bourg St Maurice. Moutiers used to be good (I know a number of people who were treated there!), so no reason to thing Bourg won't be similar. They are very used to dealing with skiing injuries!

@Pending, will the insurance not sort it out for you? E.g. how will you get there? At the end of the day it is the insurance who is picking up the tab so i would ask for transport to Bourg and go to the equivalent of A&E and take it from there. You don't want to leave a ruptured Achilles too long...

Insurance are happy to pick up the tab but Medical centre here in VT have been worse than useless. All day today waiting for a callback about referral and no call. Ugh!
Thi kiva of taxi to Albertville in am...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Pending, Sorry to hear of your troubles. We've been told several times that Chambery is the best place to go with orthopaedic problems. Good luck and hope you get sorted soon

I would have thought that the insurance would sort the referral out for you. I really am quite surprised that they have left it to you to arrange your own treatment.

They’ve left it to the medical centre here in VT rather than expecting me to sort it, but to be honest I’ll do a better job than they will, if I just knew where to go! I know Grenoble is the local trauma centre, but that might be overkill for an Achilles if there’s a better option closer.
I’m lucky they've agreed I can get it done here so I don’t mind having to arrange it.

@Pending, Some years back we had a friend and colleague of my OH whose daughter received terrible treatment for a broken leg at Moutiers (now closed), and several people, French and English, recommended Chambery at the time. Have a google

@Pending, Why not ask the Club des Sports, they are big enough that they must have several broken racers at any one time. They have a desk in the Tourist Office though I don't know how easy it is to get there in a wheelchair, I didn't spot if there was a lift. Maybe also tell them that you are a monitrice and want to get back to skiing at a high level.

I think some of the specialists rotate between hospitals. Albertville is likely to be the nearest option unless there is a specialist in Moutiers (not closed, just only open if you are referred there). Albertville hospital has been good on the last couple of visits (not for ortho mind).
Good luck!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks all. The VT clinic has finally agreed to refer me and they are suggesting Chambéry so I’m happy with that. They really want me to go home to get it fixed though - the cynical part of me thinks they don’t want the hospital to see what a mess they’ve made of it in the clinic!

@Pending, what sort of mess have they made of it?

You know it makes sense.

@Pending repair, Maybe the VT clinic have picked one of the treatment paths on the assumption that you would be going straight home.

Yeah, in fairness I think that’s what they’ve done. They seemed quite surprised this am to realise I’m still here.

No idea how the French medical system works, but I wonder if the number of orthopedic specialists / surgeons in Alps-based hospitals drops after the end of the ski season? There will be a massive reduction in the number of patients between say mid-March and end-April, at a guess perhaps of the order of 90%. With many resorts now closed it may be that the VT clinic know that the best people are now either on vacation or have transferred elsewhere, e.g. to Mediterranean resorts.

Oooh yeah, that’s a good point I hadn’t considered. Thanks!
Update - my friendly orthopod back home says I’m ok to drive home since Car is automatic provided my wrist isn’t broken, which I’m sure it isn’t. So next plan is get It scanned ASAP.

Oh yeah!! It's the only thing that's keeping me going!!
I'm seeing the local orthopod on Tuesday for removal of stitches, re-casting and hopefully a physio plan. Oh and CT results on my wrist. Fingers crossed...
