My one piece is just too hot for anything but the coldest weather. I want to buy a shell jacket so I can control my warmth with layers. Are there any recommendations.

Killy jackets are excellent. Never been too hot or too cold (except for the time I forgot my pit zips were undone).
By the way, you are joking about the one-piece, aren't you??

I like Tenson.
Their high end stuff is a shell jacket, with a zip in jacket - i.e. not a fleece, but a full on, padded, waterproof jacket.
Their trousers are also great, with side vents etc to cool down when you need to.

I'm with masopa on this. The best jacket I ever bought was a Killy. Yes, they are expensive, but technically superb. My partner loved mine so much she bought trousers in Austria in January. That was on the Tuesday. By the Thursday, she had to buy the jacket.
I was really lucky. I got mine on Snow and Rock website last Summer for half price, but could only get the matching trousers in austria, so ended up paying more than the cost of the jacket!

That's the only downside with Killy - the price. My jacket and sallies were bought in an end-of-season sale in Val d'Isere, so I paid the same price in Euros that I'd have had to pay in pounds had I bought them here. Still cost £600 though...

I got the jacket for £215(half price) but the trousers were 380 Euros. The jackets can go up to £500. My other half paid 660 Euros for hers. It may seem extravagent, but quality never was cheap, and you do get something that will last for years.

My one Killy piece is a great suit bought about 5 years ago. Its just that in the last couple of years not only has the weather been warmer, but the guides like to suggest a hike over that ridge or up that slope, and I boil over. Going again soon so I need a shell jacket and layers, I am fed up with frying. Thanks for your advice.

For such occasions, I wear a thin North Face Gore-tex jacket I bought from EB for about £180. I have a fleece that zips into it - but be aware that North Face jackets will only take North Face fleeces. They changed the design this year to ensure bigger profits.
It's a very functional jacket - I use it for hiking and even have it with me today in the office as it's a bit parky outside.

I have a Tog-24 shell that sounds similar (and has the bonus of being orange - like everything I own) but will take any fleece (presumably except North Face!)
Not bad quality and pretty cheap too.

I use a Berghaus goretex shell jacket, it's meant for climbers but it makes a good ski jacket as well.

North Face is good value. My jacket is warm and breathable, great for layers.

I've a Schoffel (sp?) With goretex, pit zips and a zip out fleece it's good in all conditions.
BTW, The Tog24 warehouse shop at Cleckheaton has very good reductions on their gear.

I use a Paramo flleece and/or Velez smock. I also have some of their base-layers underneath. Coped lovely with +2C to -9 (plus big wind chill) in the same day last week. Not for everyone - some may find it over warm and the fleece isn't windproof on its own, but soft and waterproof, and repairable but works fine even if torn - use them back in Blighty for every day wear, too.
Biggest problem is not that many pockets (if you make use of them).
Not cheap, but cheaper than Killys and some online websites do them in offers (though I've never worn one of them so don't know if better).
Would severely recommend trying on before buying though, as, as I say, not for everyone.

My preference is for Degre 7. Really happy with it and it seems to cope well in most temp ranges that I've been in. S & R have them down by 20 - 30% at the moment. How close I came to buying another one is no-one's business.
BTW, I picked up a tear on the thigh of my sallies last time out. I have a patch, but wondered whether you're supposed to stitch it to the outer lining (somehow), or if it's OK to stitch straight through. Have absolutely no idea, but I guess I should do something!

Didn't think the patches were supposed to be stitched at all - thought it was some kind of iron-on (heat-activated adhesive) thing.
If you stitch anything, bang goes your waterproofness unless you tape the seam.
Could be wrong though - I'm sure there are a few different types of patch you can get.

Mark, now I know how to recognise you, you'll be wearing the Degre 7 jacket. I've always thought degre 7 used to be good, images of Patrick Vallencent skiing the Pas de Chevre or the Poubelle I suppose. I've used SOS for the last 20 years, as far as I'm concerned, the absolute dogs, but its like anything, you get what you pay for. Plus we have our litle foibles, I won't buy Killy because I think the owner is a complete dick, if you don't believe me, go to his shop in Val d'espair when he's there. So, Mark, now you know how to recognise me SOS gear and an Ecole de Ski International cap or a helmet if its going to be a really serious day.

I've just aquired a Paramo Alta jacket and Explorer top, Nice to know somebody else uses it for skiing. not sure how many layers i'll need underneath though, suppose it's just trial and error.
Can't see the point in spending lots on something that is specifically for skiing.

Yeah, I use mine for walking, and just general use, too - they don't look like ski-wear does in the high st.
I had the velez, the taiga (very useful when it was very sunny, and fits over or under the Velez - though I didn't need to), a mountain pull on and an explorer pull on.
Most days I had a cheap wicking t on under the mountain or Explorer under the Velez or Taiga (depending on forecast) and on the last day (with the extremes mentioned above) the mountain, under the explorer under the velez. Along with a baly for the windy bits, I was toasty up top (which was good as I had to do a bit of standing around at one point), and not tooo warm down bottom (the venting helped).
From what I hear about the Alta, you'll be able to get away with very little under it, but I guess it'll depend on your own thermostat. The Explorer can be worn next to the skin (pretty comfortably).
Incidentally, apparently their walking trousers are good for skiing too, but I have no experience of them (except someone said their salopettes under their jacket made their chest just way too warm).
I'm not trying to sound evangelical - as I say, some people won't get on with it - it's just that I do.

I've got some paramo stuff. A fleece and the cascade jacket. I think mine have got scruffy quickly. I wore the jacket one year for skiing and it was fine, but maybe they don't look very cool. On the other hand I have alta trousers which I wear only for skiing and they are great, particularly like the foamy panels in the knees and the bum area. They would be too hot for walking I reckon.

I have an Eiger lightly-insulated shell in stretch Gortex. Is incredibly comfortable, and one of the few that has a soft-cloth inner on the collar - worth it's weight for that alone.
Wear it with varying numbers of layers and a Low-Alpine fluffy fleece. Not cheap, but the stretch stuff improves the comfort levels vastly, warm to the point of being sweat-soaked in 1/2day in Davos last week, wicking effective such that didn't feel it.

Interesting tidbit that I learned recently: any place in a GoreTex (or similar) jacket with pockets or other multi-layered designs is effectively non-breathable! Hence, for breathability, it is best to have a relatively simple shell. FWIW.

arcteryx sidewinder - fantastic cut, design, function and nicely understated. after years of wearing North Face shells (good) this was a big step up (for skiing anyway)

ssh in reality I think you will find that it reduces breathability but does not stop it, as austin7 points out the same applies to wearing additional layers, the trick is to strike a compromise between layers and breathability, note that even Goretex will not work in very high humidity/heavy rain it needs a difference in humidity between inside and out to work so under certain extreme conditions it will not breath, I once experienced such conditions on Dartmoor where the rain came down so heavily it was difficult to breath

On my second Columbia Titanium. Pockets for Africa, Pit Zips (incl the liner for really hot afternoons), removable hood. Liner can be worn on its own as a pretty smart fleece jacket.
One caveat - it changed colour in the tumble drier - if you wash and reproof best to air dry only.

Hi,
I am preparing for my first skiing season. I am 26-year-old women who is going to have her first skiing trip. We are going to Slovakia. At the beginning of December, I am going to the US and want to buy myself a good skiing jacket. I have done a little bit of research and found this "Arc'teryx Women's Sentinel Jacket" (number 2 in this list: http://www.bestsnowgear.com/best-womens-skiing-jackets/). Actually, I have found good reviews on several sites, so I believe it is a good choice.
First of all, I love the plain minimalistic design. I don't like these colorful hip skiing clothes. Maybe they are nice, but not for me.
Second, I trust the reviews, especially the ones on Amazon.
The price is not low and I like it. Cheap thing can't be well-made.
Do you have any comments on my choice? Will appreciate any input. I am buying the jacket for at least 3-4 seasons, therefore I need to have a durable and comfortable piece of wear.
Any input appreciated.

@GizmoOne, Welcome to the forum.
You can rest assured that your choice is one of the best brands around....but....it might be ott (pricewise), for a first time skier, especially if you don't know whether you will like skiing. It also could depend on how many weeks skiing you intend doing.
You can get great brands at TK Maxx (best choice on website, which can be returned to local store if not suitable) and Sport Persuit (including Arc'teryx)...so worth a look.
Anyhow, if this is what you want, it's a great brand.
