Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, I'm planning a trip for four of us to Serre Chevalier in early February 2018. There are three skiers and me, a boarder. Two of the skiers are intermediates and the other skier is bordering on being reasonable.
I am looking for options/possibilities for some off-piste guiding for the good skier and me on a board. We both have full avalanche kit and are reasonably competent off-piste.
The other two may be interested in an off-piste lesson while we go play, any recommendations for a decent school with English speaking instructors?
Also are there any off-piste routes that people recommend that we could look out for; as I am on a board ones that don't require too much hoofing would be preferred.
Any other general bits of advice on good runs would also be appreciated as it would be nice to get the maximum out of the week.
TIA

@Sn00ks, Gavin Crosby at New Generation Ski School in Monetier is a really excellent instructor (also off-piste). Not sure if he does mixed group guiding or not - you could ask.

There is also a good independent French instructor Richard d'Hurlaborde who both boards and skis - excellent English and a great guy to spend the day with. Tel: + 33 (0) 6 59 24 17 29 email: montagneattitude@hotmail.fr.

The Cucumelle area toward Monetier is really fun for off-piste, as it's a big open bowl.

Denis at the ESF in Chantemerle, married to a Welsh lady so his English is perfect.
Off the top of the Cucumelle there is some awesome off piste also off the Eychauda drag lift there is some good runs, depending on conditions as it can be very windy/icy up there. If you head down the back of the Prorel lift you can go down the back of the Col du Prorel and down into Briancon.

In addition, try and book onto the 'First Tracks' - free with your lift pass every Wednesday morning roughly an hour before the lifts open. You go up with the ski patrollers and get to be the first people on the mountain, they give you some information on the resort and answer your questions, if you have any.

Hi Sn00ks
I brought a mixed group of 10 to Serre Che in March - had a fantastic time. It was probably the best week of the season (4-10th March, including 4 days with fresh snow). I was doing a lot of accessible off piste boarding and as @Pasigal said, the Curcumelle bowl either side of the Vallons lift is fantastic. On the low vis days, the woods around aiguillette were excellent. The Casse de Boeuf black first thing in the morning after snowfall is great too, it is left unpisted so it's a mess by the end of the day. We got an ESF guide to bring us off-piste for a couple of hours and got some great runs from the Serre Chevalier and L'eychauda peaks. He finished up by taking us down underneath the Frejus gondola. The woods at the top of that last run were a bit much for me (steep and close packed trees). There was excellent between-piste boarding from Col du Prorel down towards Briancon also but it did turn to slush earlier than other places due to the aspect.
Have a great time!

Many thanks for all your pointers .
Now hoping for a reasonable snow pack and even some freshies while we're there.

I've had some of the best days skiing of my life with Richard, and I echo Gamsbock, he's a lovely guy - highly recommended.
