Hi
Anyone ever seen where you might be able to buy a bubble from a dismantled lift? I am after one of the older style ones. I saw a pile of them at La Praz last winter, and Les Gets a couple of summers back but couldn't find out who to ask. They must go somewhere! We want one as a feature in our business.
If anyone has one behind their sofa, or in the shed I will collect

If you're serious about trying to track one down then a couple of suggestions;
> find out all the resorts which are upgrading their lifts during the summer, then which was an old style gondola and then contact the lift company for the village. Often they just give them to whoever asks.
> Contact the lift manufacturer "Poma" I think they're Italian.
Shipping could be quite expensive though!

the old rendlbahn in St. Anton is (has?) being (been) dismantled this summer..now that's a proper 'james bond' style of lift cabin.

Alpe d'Huez is replacing Marmottes 1 with a six man covered chair.
The old bubbles were white with bad tempered sliding side doors, but this didn't seem reason enough to take them all out.
The replacement system - new pylons, new cable etc - must be costing a fortune. Couldn't they have spent the money somewhere else, or do these systems have a natural life span, after which the men from health and safety arrive and order it removed ?
Anyone know ?

This season we've had 3 chairs replaced with chairs...... one is was a 6 man and I think will be a 6 man so you've got to wonder why bother until you're told it will take capacity from 1800 to 3000 people an hour..... the whole lot (stations, pylons etc etc) have to be replaced........ they've also done so much ground works to make the area around the lift better too!!

FranzKlammer, what a strange thing to do. so you ride Marmottes 1 with your skis on, then need to take them off to get onto Marmottes 2 and 3. Guess it's a speed/capacity thing

Yeah they have a natural life, so many hours for cables, so many for whatever is suspended from the cables, so many for the guide wheels on the pylons, so many for the pylons themselves and so on.
Cables will be replaced on a regular basis, and regular maintenance will be carried out elsewhere, and when this is done properly a typical lift system has something like a 20 year life span, at one time what would happen then is that the service costs become unatractive compared to teh cost of replacing the whole system (save perhaps teh top and bottom structures) and it would be replaced, the old lift system would then be taken away and possibly reconditioned by the manufacturer and sold on to a less well known (poorer) resort, these days with litigation and so on that has become less attractive so many of teh units are scrapped
(Sorry I still have problems with "the" unless I concentrate  )

scottydog, Tanignes, on way up to PDS, there's a bric-a-brac type place close to the junction where you take the road up to Les Gets. There was a white egg in the yard a few weeks ago.

Not sure if they are still there, but there was a stack of replaced ones at Matlock about 3 years ago. There is a gondola up the hill to a visitor centre.

The Les Gets red bubbles are in the Bric a Broc in Tanninges, along with a few white ones from somewhere else.
Actually stored in a corner field as you descend from Les Gets.
Have heard they are asking silly money.

Chris Bish, they were all for sale at the time (must be several years ago now). Someone who lives at the bottom of the Via Gellia must have bought one of them as it's now a feature in their front garden!

Anyone still after a telecabin might like to know that 2Alpes is replacing the Diable with a six-man chair this interseason, will presumably be getting rid of the cabins.

I don't think I've ever actually been on the red eggs, I've never stayed that end. Must make a point of using them next week before they disappear. Lift download looks likely anyway.

I think you could probably buy one at Super St Bernard. In fact you could probably buy a whole lift system. It did not run at all this winter. The owners cannot afford to refurbish it. A pity, because there is some very nice lift-accessible off-pite there, of my sort of standard - i.e. not too difficult.

Anybody know if you can buy old cabins/bubbles whatever you would call them? Is there a scrap yard anywhere that sells them? I'm sure we saw some kind of a scrapyard on the way from Samoens to Geneva airport. Has anybody ever bought one?
My dad would love one for his back garden!

Thanks that would be perfect bar the location! The other ones were in the UK quite near to me and those would require a tranny van from france. If I fail on the UK ones I'll try the French one and see what kind of delivery they can arrange!
