Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hyper-extension in both knees

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi there after a little advice, I have hyper-extension in both knees had it all my life and until the age of 16 when trying to get into the army didnt think/know anything was a miss until there doctor kindly told me there was and then showed me the door! Never really worried about it until lately old age is catching up the big 30 is looming... just wondered if there is anyone who knows anyways to aid it ? exercises or any other methods, there has been a few occasions more so lately when I have accidentally locked it out luckily not much weight was on the leg but with the ligament only getting older wondered if there was anything that could be done to sort it or slow down its degrade. thanks in advance! Puzzled

@Samc12, It is probably terminology related, but hyper-extension is an event rather than an illness. Your knee/leg gets a bit beyond straight in a bad way. I know what you mean about locking it out. You just fall over and look like an eejit.

I wrecked both knees playing football as a teenager. They used to burn when I sat down for 20 minutes. Keep your weight within a reasonable range and hit the gym. Don't skip leg day. I haven't had any bother with the knees for 30ish years.

@Thornyhill, I suspect the OP means hypermobility, which I believe can be a congenital condition. These exercises look as though they might be useful:

@Hurtle, @Thornyhill, Stand corrected hypermobility leading to many hyperextension moment usually on a descent after a long days climbing in the summer! I'm not going to lie missing leg day is somewhat a speciality of mine, nobody likes leg day, that must change... and eventually I may lose the nickname "Bird knees Sam"

I heard a program recently on exactly this. Hypermobility in older people.

Basically what they were saying was, that as you age what might have not been a problem to a young person, indeed may even have helped in some sports, can cause joint instability as one ages.

The suggested way to deal with it was exercise to maintain strength and in severe cases specialist physiotherapy. It also mentioned that surgery was not an effective route to go down.

@Samc12,

Hi . You need to try and quantify how severe your hyper extension of the knee is.

Do your Beighton score.

http://hypermobility.org/help-advice/hypermobility-syndromes/beighton-score/

Then post that back with the knee problems you are experiencing or concerned about and I’ll give you some guidance.
