@martinperry, just go to a recommended boot fitter. Where does your friend live?

Surefoot have a rep for oversize fitting and then stiffing the customer for a foamed liner to fill the voids. And all at a top end price.
Oversized calves aren't an issue to a good fitter with the right kit who will put you in to the correct boot and then stretch the rear of the cuffs to fit the calf muscles. The problem is that a lot of shops don't have the cuff stretching thingymabob etc so you're more likely to get an oversize boot.
CEM/Solutions4Feet have a cuff stretching thingymabob in their workshop.

In desperation in resort I ended up in surefoot, got the job done but I probably could have done better in the UK.

@spyderjon, Surefeet moved me into a smaller boot than one I had previously ,despite me having two huge bone protrusions on back my ankles (haglunds syndrome) checked my knee brace fitted with boots etc spot on service , fitted two of friends subsequently .another rather sceptical and very exacting friend went along and was told no need for need new boots they were tweaked with new foot beds and liner. Mark in valdisere will not sell a boot unless the right for each individual .

@vipul, I appreciate that your experience with Mark in Val D was excellent but I have heard many stories from my customers who used Surefoot outlets in many resorts and their experience is as my description. As with any of the chain retailers it's down to who is actually fitting you but I've seen many Surefoot boots with excessive shell gap for their intended requirements.
I don't sell boots but I've been fortunate over the years to have been fitted by some of the best fitters around so I've got a pretty good understanding of what's required. This is very useful as I drill mount hundreds of pairs of skis a season and the last thing I want to do is to drill an expensive ski for a bsl that is obviously too big for the user so I have a Brannock mondo measurer plus a set of shell gap measuring rods that I'll do shell checks with if I suspect an issue - and I regularly see boots waaaay oversize.

@spyderjon, I would put MARK up with any boot fitter any where , he inspected my feet measured them asked my skiing preferences /ability checked ankle flexibility the lot , told me what he was going to do and price etc . He also said nice things about CEM , ALAIN BAXTER when he had a shop recently closed I understand.
