Poster: A snowHead
|
Just booked a cheeky 5 nights 31/12 to 04/1 to Morzine. My questions are:-
Will there be snow in Morzine and Les Gets or only in Avoriaz???
New Years Eve - Is it worth booking somewhere or will that not be an issue.
Thanks
Liam

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Snow? Who knows? Seriously. No way of knowing.
Booking? I would have thought absolutely imperative. In Chamonix most restaurants sell tickets to sit down and eat.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I dunno, do you think it'll rain in Norfolk that week?

You need to Login to know who's really who.

Morzine lifts haven’t been open last 2 years at NY (I think, happily corrected) Avoriaz yes but obviously packed out. The Morzine locals say it should be a good season (something to do with the wasps activity in late summer, go figure) but it would be too risky for my comfort level.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Dr John, I think you are correct. But the last few seasons have been unseasonably poor (see what I did there? )
Doesn’t give us any indication whatsoever as to what this year will be like.
But I am still prety sure you will need to book a restaurant. And a night club if you are partying later.

No idea but as you are already committed why not pre-book the PDS lift pass and get the 10% early booking discount.

You’ll want the PDS pass anyway to at least get over to Linga, especially if the snow isn’t great lower down.
I have had excellent NY snow in Morzine. It sometimes happens...
But I wouldn’t rely on it!

@under a new name, agree that booking somewhere for the busiest single evening of the entire season might not be a bad idea.

@Dr John, if it was Chamonix, absolutely and totally essential. Even just to get into many of the bars.

Definitely book, even the more casual places.

Personally I'd hold off as if they skiing IS limited they will drop the lift pass prices to match - and wouldn't bank on them offering a refund for pre-booked passes. Worst case you're down £22 but week 1 last year with only 10 runs open up in Avoriaz meant a lift pass price of I think 70-90Euro, rather than 200.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Definitely book, but be aware that even though it is NYE, some places will try and book you on a 2 service model.
So they'll be trying to turn the tables around between 21h and 22h.
If you want to eat, then go to a bar for the midnight nonsense, then that's fine, but don't expect to be able to sit in the restaurant from 8PM - midnight as there is a good chance that there is a second sitting booked on your table.
Most bars in Morzine will be ticket only too.
As for the lift-pass thing, there have been limits on buying lift passes when there has been no snow elsewhere in previous years when people were coming from all over to use the lifts in Avoriaz.
If you already have a pass, then at least you'll be sorted in that respect - You could hold out for a discount, but then if they impose limits on the passes sold, you might find it difficult to get a pass.
Below is a previous notice on the subject:
ATTENTION: To ensure the safety of our customers in the ski area, we need to restrict access.
In order of priority, customers will be served:
- Presales made on the site: www.skipass-avoriaz.com
- Presales made by the hosts of the Avoriaz
- Presales made by tour operators
- Presales made by Avoriaz Ski Schools, Morzine and Montriond
Up to you really......

Probably IS worth pre-booking a pass in that case then.
