Poster: A snowHead

I've been offered the same chalet I stayed in last new year for an amazingly cheap price! Last year the snow was horrendous and the snow line sat at around 2200m when we were in Paradiski. I know that people aren't weather gods, and cant predict snow months in advance but over say the last ten years, what has the state of skiing been in Paradiski/Espace Killy the week of Christmas and new year. The chalet itself is based right down in the valley at Bourg so within 25 minutes I can be at les arc, la plague, Tignes, la rosier, St Foy and we have lots of options. I just don't really want another boiler plate ice holiday like the new year just gone.

If you go the snow will be crap
If you don't it will be brilliant
So probably best to go and have an OK holiday, rather than risk the sickening feeling of missing out on an epic one

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

New Year in the Alps with or without snow v. New Year in Manchester. Hmmmm.
I go that time every year and for sure the conditions haven't been good last few years, but over all the years I've done it, I've had many many more good than bad. We're due a good one. New Year before last we went hiking which meant we could send the lift pass money on beer. Every cloud etc.

2009 Paradiski - snow all the way from the UK on the drive over which was a nightmare but great snow conditions once there
2010 ADH - very good, could ski to Vaujany, etc.
2011 Paradiski - excellent all week but capped of with a big dump Friday
2012 Les Contamines - excellent - good on arrival and then we got fresh snow
2013 ADH - very good - a bit of everything
2014 Tignes - very poor
2015 Paradiski - very poor
2016 Paradiski - average
As the man said we are due a good one.

@Layne, that's a good insight thank you. Think I'll go ahead and book. As @Pruman, says, new year in mountains is better than in Manchester!

@Ricklovesthepowder, I reckon it will be pretty cheap in April too, but much higher chance of good snow.
By my reckoning we've had poor starts to the last 4 seasons - 13/14 was just about ok in the end - from what I remember areas with access to higher snow were very busy, and the following 3 were definitely very poor.
But if is *really* cheap, you don't have to take additional time off work to do it, and could enjoy the holiday even if there was very limited skiing, then worth a punt.

I'm off for ten days over Christmas. The accommodation is £300 for 6 days. I'd spend that at home including going out on NYE so seems like a good idea to me.

I think last year was rather unusually bad for NY. That said we have had a couple of close run things when the snow came REALLY late. I expect we will be going to our place on the 26th but we've decided to buy flights last minute only if the snow looks good. Doubtless that will cost us money but if the snow is good I won't care! Benefit is that we won't feel bound to use our prebought flights if the snow hasn't made an appearance.

10 years in Sainte Foy. 6 Christmases have been somewhere between "very good for the time of year" and "excellent". One was "acceptable" and 3 (the last 3) were poor (although even then there was variation within that - last year was actually pretty skiable here).
There can be a big change in conditions between Christmas and New Year. On the same basis as above, I'd go with 8 New Years that were "very good for the time of year" to "excellent" and 2 which were poor.
2 of the last 3 remained poor for New Year week, one massively improved by the infamous changeover day storm. The one "acceptable" Christmas somewhere in the deeper past also improved by New Year.

With respect, 'very good for the time of year' is a bit meaningless. 1cm of slush in August would be amazing for the time of year but not much use to ski on. All that matters is the actual quality of the snow.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Jeez, you must be fun at parties. "Very good for the time of year" at Christmas would, to any experienced skier, suggest good quality piste skiing, pretty-much everything open, but potentially limited off-piste, maybe some very high/low runs closed, snowpark not built yet, etc.
