Or not. Early snow has come - and completely gone - before. Let's hope the snow base does build up fairly steadily this season.

@achilles, ....2010 in Valais. Lean October and Nov. Christmas, more snow than anyone could handle. Two metres on our steps, avalanche in the garden (children banned from moving around without us), and snow being trucked out of town.
2011 Christmas thin.
2012 terrible
2013 bad
2014 awful
2015 grim
2016 huge dump in November, then ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Grief, there were DHs on the fire roads, in shorts....for F sake. Christmas: nothing. Early Jan: nothing. Mediterranean sun. Finally, in Feb, a paltry fall, but enough to cover the pistes. Off piste dreadful.
Early snow can be a chimera.

It's very good (and much-needed) news for the glaciers though. Stubai normally opens in about 2 weeks, and prior to the weekend that was looking impossible.
Everywhere else it'll melt, like every year when it snows at altitude in Sept.

Few weeks ago I was trekking in Aosta valley (Gran Paradisio), on the arrival day it was +35 in Aosta, while a few days later while crossing a +3000m col I was greated by a heavy snow. Weird feeling it was indeed ... it will all be fine

@under a new name, so was that the last snow of the winter before or the first snow of the following winter?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Last year, it snowed from mid Oct to the end of Nov... and then the EK opened. One of the best weekends I've ever had!!
Snow in Sept won't last though.

In NZ, we have a phrase "the snow in May will never stay"... May obviously being the last month before the southern winter, aka November for northern folk. To talk about snowfall in September being a season's indicator is absurd. Fun to speculate if nothing else!
Speaking of NZ and Middle Earth, this thread title reminds me of one Bilbo "Beggins" who set off on an adventure that took him across the Misty Mountains... wonder how they've fared in this recent storm

A colleague with whom I travelled a lot in small third world airports insisted there was "fake luggage" which was put on carousels to reassure punters that something was happening. This is the fake weather thread.

Certain I've seen that at Geneva, three suitcases appear on the belt and then nothing for 30 mins.

In the third world they're often those big stripey plastic bags tied up with hairy string. Something classier in Gva perhaps?

This is Manchester's trick as well; I think it's so they can say they've met their KPI's

In reality ours began several months ago, chalet booked, new kit bought, school holiday woes... I'm just hoping the most reliable things will be my truck and the snow.

How accurate are those LT forecasts eh @Whitegold, ?
My understanding is that accuracy longer than a week is negligible.

LT Forecast, zero value. Gives blowhards something to talk about. He has a 50/50 chance of saying I told you so.
