Poster: A snowHead
|
Next Feb we are flying to Oslo and then driving to Salem in Sweden. I am considering using this as the excuse to update my rather old TomTom to the TomTom Go 6100 which has world maps, to help navigate us there and also navigate across to Tysil for the day we plan to ski there.
Had anybody used this out there? Any problems?
Many thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

With smart phones, I think sat navs must nearly be obsolete. Get the "Here WeGo" app, and you can download country maps and use the navigation offline.
If you really want a separate sat nav, then yes it will work fine. Only issue sometimes in Norway is that seem to be constantly building new roads, bridges and tunnels with all their money.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Themasterpiece, that was my original plan but this one comes with life time world map updates, and a life time sim for traffic updates. Coupled with being a bigger screen than my phone I am being tempted to go for that option.
However was wondering how good they really were with keeping up to date with road updates.

You need to Login to know who's really who.

It will work just fine. The only issue that you need to check in advance is that some roads/mountain passes are closed in winter. SatNav will take you by the fastest/shortest route and would not necessarily know if a road is closed or not

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@mooney058, Great point , This happens all the time to me in Italy and France and it is essential to check passes...

You'll need to Register first of course.

This model comes with sim via which it updates the traffic information- does anybody know if that will work outside the U.K.? Given it also comes with world wide maps I feel it SHOULD but suspect it won't.

Yep TomTom live traffic is pretty good in Norway. At least on routes with enough traffic to supply data.
In my experience it won't always pick up acute delays on remote backroads. But the other day on a single track road in the middle of nowhere it showed the planned dynamiting that was going on - data I guess they must have got from some highways agency equivalent. Didn't provide a reroute as it was a ten km long dead end!
And a recent map update added a bunch of gravel forestry roads which had been missing previously. Similar data shows on google maps traffic (and they probably have more individual data sources) so TomTom is not the only option. But I'd buy another if this one broke.
