Hi all, this is my first post ...I sadly fractured my tibial plateau on the first day of our skiing trip to Italy last weekend....MRI shows non displace fracture going through a funny bit of bone , sore y not medical ...in a leg brace and NWB waiting for doc to decide if surgery is necessary ...question is , will I be able to ski next season and does anyone out there have any experience of pins, plates or not ? Thank you

@Skiingruby,welcome to snowheads. yes you will be able to ski next season...lots of rehab. I did mine on 1st April 2013 and skied end November 2013 and did a few weeks that season. Physio 3 times a week till my insurance ran out...check your travel insurance, i had £500 of physio cover....i did Physio and gym 5 times a week. I still have physio once a week and do gym once or twice a week. I still have the plate and screws but some folk have them removed. Do a search on here .... a few of us have posted our stories.

Thank you ....the MRI showed up some sort of benign thingy in my tibia which the fracture has gone through so I'm hoping the surgeon will pin/plate it as I don't want to leave a weakness there. Or have to go through another period of NWB in the future cos it's frustrating lol ...think m y travel insurance pays for some physio so will look in to it....happy that I will be back on skis next season 😀...it's such a shame as it was going to be the first season ever we were going twice but heyho ...thanks for tips

Wow, are you ok now ? Luckily there doesn't seem to be soft tissue damage 😀It's the first time in years of skiing that we have taken out insurance with lift pass ...would recommend it to everyone , it's amazing value and so efficient ..off Mountain in stretcher , ambulance to hospital and treated all in a couple of hours ...will talk to consultant today and see what he says ...thank s guys ...feeling more optimistic would hate the thought of never skiing again ...roll on 2017/18 😀⛷⛷

@Skiingruby, pretty much OK. The damage is there but I've got legs like footballers now! I use a brace and ski mojo now and i can ski all day easily.

Sorry to hear about your injury @Skiingruby ! It all depends on how serious the injury is from what I understand. They usually use a 6 level scale to describe the injury. Anyway, I did mine last season and I have 6 screws and 1 pin inside my knee. I had a Schatzker III b. Like @holidayloverxx, says, you need to treat the rehab seriously and probably you will be back on ski next year. It is a long road and can sometimes a bit frustrating, but hard work pays of. I have started to ski again and can do some runs but not at the same level as before. Tried to go off-piste against my physio's advice but that was a no go for now. Will take it chill this winter and hope that will be back for serious skiing next winter.
Good luck with rehab

I had a shatsker type 2 TPF four years ago, if you look on my post about my broken fib n tib theres an x ray showing the small bracket they fitted.
I had my operation in the UK as they cant operate until the swelling goes down, i was glad i had the op in the UK..!! Had it done by professor Chakrabati.. fantastic job..
I did mine on the 7th march and was skiing again on the 15th October at the chill factor, then went to champoluc in the january. Although I missed a day skiing due to swelling .. to be honest it was boarderline that i should have gone but I had to put a lot of hard work into rehab, as theres a lot of excersizes you CANT do with a TPF repair,...no running..no impact training...and most of the gym equipment is out of bounds lol.... so its straight leg raises and plenty of cycling..oh and bend the knee everyday till you cry !!!
I now ski better than i ever did due to training and some lessons.... the hard work pays off... until somebody skies into the back of you 😫

You guys are great 😀 My consultant now has all my previous MRI's as I had problems with that knee before and I am having another X-ray/appointment on friday, so I guess he will decide if it needs pinning and playing ...I apparently have a bone lesion which is where the break went through ...weakest point I suppose , but it's benign they think ...fingers crossed . Managing some straight leg raises but keep getting cramp 😩 I assume once it's all fixed walking will be ok as I have two large dogs ! I usually swim , front crawl , and cycle to keep fit ...can't run in any case as I'm rubbish at running ! Is x trainer ok ?
I know it's a way off but can't wait to start rehab....thanks guys this forum really helps

@Skiingruby, when you have had your consultation get your physio sorted. They will advise on what exercise to do now and what to do when you are healed.
I use a lot of the gym equipment...leg extension, leg curl, leg press, TRX straps, bosu, step up, squat rack, bike, free weights, kettle bells, dip machine plus mats for lunges, planks etc. I am not a big walker but could if i wanted to. I have no interest in cross trainer but again i could if i wanted to.

I had a non-displaced TPF 12mths ago. Skied on the Livigno bash 2weeks ago with no real issues. I used a brace and ice in evening as a precaution but probably didn't need to.
Mine wasn't immediately diagnosed and was thought to be ligament damage so was told to use it as much as I could. Luckily it remained stable and healed. Lots of physio and exersize and it's about got to the point I forget about it.
I had 3 trip s planned last year and had to cancel2 but I'm making up for it this year... and I can still walk my dog.

That's good news then ....as long as I can swim , cycle and walk my dogs and ski next year I'm happy 😀I know it's a long road but I guess patience is a virtue ..thanks guys

I'm cycling loads as well. Regularly 70-80miles on Sundays and over 20hrs Xmas week with no issues. Felt odd at first (especially out of saddle) with some tenderness after a couple of hours but it gradually took longer. I was told by physio to set pedal/cleats to slacked setting at first but that was mainly because there was some concern about ACL.

A word of warning about skiing the following season...
I broke my leg pretty badly in March 2014. I smashed the bottom of my leg and my ankle socket into hardcore. I was NWB for 20 weeks.
Against all good advice, I planned to ski again in the season of 2014/5. At the end of October (7 months after the original accident) I put my foot down a small pavement pothole... and my leg snapped like a dry twig. The weekend before, I had done a 100 mile bike ride in under 6 hours and I felt quite fit. Although it looked and felt fine, the veins in/on the bone were a long way from reforming and the bone was indeed a dry twig, held together by the plate and screws. It had no strength at all.
I had another op on my leg and this time had a Tibial Nail fitted. Mine is an 11mm diameter titanium rod that is inserted through the bone marrow at my knee and bolted in, top and bottom. I was able to walk with my hospital physio the next day (albeit in massive pain), but it still took quite a while to be pain free, probably 6 months.
I first skied again at the start of 2016 and it's been fine. I have been warned that if I smash myself up again, my leg won't break, but it will bend... permanently!!
Don't rush to get back, wait at least a year and maybe longer and be certain you have achieved full bone strength.
Break 1
Break 2

@bar shaker, I think the difference here is that your leg was pretty smashed up and the OPs isn't really. If the OP skis again next season it could easily be a year away so as long as her consultant and physio are content then I wouldn't envisage a problem. Excellent injury porn...well done

@holidayloverxx, I agree that going this time next year should easily be fine. My circumstances were somewhat different, but do highlight how we can think we are healed and are some way from it.
My friends all say I have 'scrap value' now Strangely it doesn't set off the airport metal detectors.

Ha ha ...I will let you know what the consultant says on Friday ....xxx. I am hoping he will pin it as I am worried that the weird weak patch in my tibia will just cause another break in the future xx

Hi there ...does anyone have any experience of the fracture going through what the consultant thinks is a bone cyst/enchrondroma thingy ...it appears that this was the weakest point in my leg as all the soft tissues are luckily Ok ....this is why I am hoping he will fix it permanently xx
|
|
|
|
|
|
just seen my consultant again ...fracture still non displaced almost 2 weeks on so he doesn't feel surgery is necessary ...the bone enchondroma is also unchanged from previous scans so is nothing sinister (also good news) ..the downside is i have a tear full or partial in PCL but he wont look at that until fracture healed up..so on balance pretty good ...looking forward to rehab now ( 4 more weeks NWB)...anyone used a Wattbike ? thanks for all your support and tips guys x

Yep, they are brilliant. One of the best bits, is they measure each leg output, so great for working on your weaker leg and seeing the results.

Hi guys..ok so my break isnt too bad and I have torn my pcl , but I am really struggling with something I wasn't expecting.....I'm normally very active walking my dogs , gym , swimming blah blah but I'm now a tearful emotional wreck and I don't know how to deal with 'broken leg blues ' any advice xx

@Skiingruby, focus on recovery. I had a couple of teary moments over the most trivial if things....frustration at not being able to do things for myself. I set myself goals such as being able to wash my hair, get in the bath myself, stand on one leg long enough to make a sandwich then to carry it into the living room. Snall things but hugely significant for my independence.
I also worked from home for a while every day from the day after i got out of hospital
Doing the non weight bearing exercises was a good focus point...in hindsught i wish i had done them much more often

I shattered my tibial plateau in a fall late 90s. Also had partial rupture off ACL. Plated and half dozen or do screws, done in Thonon, France. No ACL repair. Was told I'd be OK for walking might be able to potter around blue Runs in a few years.
Had one year out from skiing. Had the metalwork removed. Took up mountain bike racing as rehab and returned to skiing a year later, ski anything, off piste, and and on piste. Been ripping it ever since. The knee hurts sometime but so what.
Just don't jump anymore!
Do good rehab and just keep having fun.

My dog broke my leg. No hard feelings Bertie! Lots of non wait bearing as nothing displaced. He also took out my ACL. I also had another fracture due to not being told about ACL failure. However after an ACL repair all is fine. It did take time and a lot of hard work in the gym but all came right in the end. Every day you will improve. Chin up. Every day you will improve, little things will become a big step forward. X

Ha ha ...the thought of never seeing the snow sparkle when the sun hits it just right , or the first run of the day when the slopes are empty , or the bombardinos in the Italian mountain restaurants , or the clear blue sky,the sound of skis on snow ...I could go on ...is far worse than a bit of a broken leg and a torn PCL ...I was even stupidly wondering if I could make it on the 27 march this year but no that's really dumb !!!
One of the most positive things to come out of this though is discovering this forum ...it's been a massive help xxxx

You sum it up beautifully! I've had the same since my Tib/Fib break 16th November 16. I tell people 'the only way I won't ski again is if it is from medical advice'. I was reading your emotional response to the injury and I was the same. I thought I'd be up and about working in a few weeks... Silly me. Nearly 3 months from the break and I'm doing twice a week physio where I'm managing to do the bike, stepper and rowing machine plus work on the parallel bars stepping up with bad leg and down with good; still on the crutches though. Healing has all been good and so far and the biggest prob for me now for me is swelling in ankle and foot and mentally adjusting to weighting the leg again. Ive got a little more of an incentive to get back on planks as I'm a part time dry slope instructor but I am being realistic with time frame of return.
The best way I've found so far to cope is little targets and little improvements on a daily basis and most of all staying positive; you can't re-write what happened but you can certainly affect your recovery and the future! You will ski again, make it happen!!
All the very best for your recovery and yes you are so right too about the forum, so many shared positive stories!

@Skiingruby, I have been into resort on crutches for a non skiing holiday and enjoyed being in the mountains. However l would have preferred to ski. Being in the mountains is good for you if you can accept that. ( l found it hard)

I also went to the Alps last year on crutches after the accident. Being in the mountains is always good

ok guys now this is probably really dumb ..but do you think it would be possible to ski at the end of march if i put a good knee brace on or is that just stupid and optimistic lol ....x

If your doctors (and insurance company) say yes then yes. If they don't say you can then it would be silly to ski, knee brace or no knee brace.
