Anybody have any recommendations for catered chalets in Morzine? We are a young couple and are trying to keep hold of as many pennies as possible but would be willing to pay for a nice chalet over a hotel room? Any advice welcomed, thanks all.

@Tomf05, Why go catered, when you can go B&B and eat in a different restaurant each night with different people each night, cheap or expensive, choice is yours to make.

Could someone enlighten me please, will Les Gets be alright in general for the second week of Easter next year. We missed skiing this year, went to la Plagne 2013 which had huge amounts of snow plus we stayed at Aime 2100 I think. Pamski, this year only 2 adults 2 teenagers plus I'm considering driving over this time. Any suggestions anyone. Cheers in advance J

@grandunion, I had to look up and see the dates for April next year. By second week I assume you mean week of Monday 6th April. My OH has just looked up on his records and we were still skiing in Les Gets that week last year, but having said that we were also skiing other places too that week as we live there and have the car and PDS passes. 6th April was the last day of skiing on MC last year. It was very very warm last year by that stage. If you are driving you will have much more flexibility by that part of the season.

@grandunion, yep, we were in LG that week last year and the year before. I would guess that the home runs will be heavy at the beginning of the week, and even higher up, by the 13th, you'll be struggling. Having said that, the pisteurs do an amazing job to keep Chavannes open as late as they can and who's to say what 2015 will be like. I would reckon on driving up to Prodains to ski Avoriaz at least some of the days. Its only about 15 mins from Les Gets, but you'll need the full PdS pass as you can't just pay the extra over a Morzine/Les Gets pass; they charge you the full €40(?) day rate.

Late season is all about luck.
Last year the snow was getting rather wet at the bottom of the Prodains/Ardent runs by even early afternoon, and they were really struggling to keep the Pleney red run open at all in the first week in April. And then they got fresh snow the following week. As the people there the week after us took unnecessary pleasure in telling us, the gits.
On the flip side if it's too hot to ski late season at least it's hot and you can lay out in the sun. Better in many ways than having a freezing snap during a peak week where you're too cold to spend much time on the slopes even in every item of clothing you have with you.

Everything open and humming at Christmas - we are usually there from about the 12th and it is usually a mass of white vans buzzing around finishing things off everywhere and then suddenly its all open. All the shops will be open and restaurants, lifts etc. Father Christmas usually does a visit to the slopes around the bottom of the gondola at 5 to 6 on Christmas Eve, but that all needs checking out when you get there - if important. Have a great time.

Thanks @Pamski, we are there from the 19th. Know the town quite well but have never done Christmas before so really looking forward to this trip. The lifts are due open on the 20th I believe?
We are self-catering - I assume shops all closed Xmas day? But open as usual Xmas Eve? Will mountain restos and bars be open as normal throughout?
Looking forward to skiing Xmas day - are the slopes usually busy then? I imagine everyone in good spirits!
Oh, also is there anywhere in Les Gets we could buy a small mini Xmas tree?!?

I seem to remember some shops being open on Xmas Day - a corner shop type place in Morzine - stock up in advance.
Re: Xmas tree = save yourself hassle and buy a mini fake one to take with you or just take loads of packs of paper chains and leave the kids to it one evening?

@5RED, the centre of Les Gets always looks super pretty and festive at Christmas too. Book in early for Christmas Eve/ Christmas day dinner as it can book up.

@5RED, the shops will be open - certainly till lunchtime on Christmas Day itself. The butcher just along from Carrefour is good. We have a funny little artificial tree that gets dug out and also a rather naff tinsely thing too. All depends on how many of us there are and if there are small grandchildren and a dog involved too. I recall that last year I bought a small real tree from Sainsburys here - was to be £10 but by the time I bought it it was down to £5. We must have had it inside somewhere and then my OH just stuck it out on the terrace and found it still living happily in the summer and so he stuck it in the garden and by September it had grown quite well.
Petit Casino opposite Carrefour (which used to be Shopi) is often a bit better for vegetables. We tend to go to Super U in Taninges or Carrefour at St Jean d'Aulps. Definitely worth booking anywhere that you do fancy for meals during that week.
My daughter brought sprouts with them last year - so we were well stocked with those as I was able to buy them locally.

Having just found this thread as opposed to the weather one ...........
There were plenty of sprouts on sale in Bourg St Maurice the last two Christmas`s. Not that I bought them! This is our first ever venture into a catered chalet so it will be a nice change. However I think Xmas Eve is the chalet staff night off so has anyone got any recommendations where to go in Morzine and when to book?

Wow @Nadenoodlee, their menu looks yummy and reasonably priced. Are the drinks reasonable too. On google maps its only a 5 min drive from our chalet

Yep- it's bloody good value and absolutely delightful- run by a husband and wife. I don't wish to give the game away but Santa comes- bearing free booze. Probably see you there

I have been looking at the resort map and piste map and we will be staying pretty close to the Super Morzine lift. I have never been to this area of Morzine and am wondering what its like? Given that I am obliged to ski gently these days (nice wide reds/blues avoiding too many turns) and not for too long at a time are the blue runs shown in that area any good? Or are they roads in summer?
I am wondering if we`d be better driving to the other side that we know but that does mean braving the horrid parking (unless that has been solved?) Or driving round to Les Gets even? I do not want to ski Avoriaz unless its absolutely unavoidable due to snow conditions
Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated.

From a brief read, its not looking all that hopeful, quite awkward timings for first lifts or any extended apres sessions.
A) bus to nearest ski lift, take line 1 or 2, change at montriond to connect to Ardent/lindarets gondola. OR continue to morzine, take A bus to prodains for avoriaz, or cross town to ski the pleney/les gets sector. Most shops will offer storage, but id fear you're adding to the journey time from accom to slope.
B) Nightlife midweek, busy, no less so than a weekend in my experience, usual haunts and it depends what you're after. Avoid leaving jackets out of sight, don't bother queuing to get in anywhere, the queue for the bar will be worse than the queue for the door.
C) taxis are around at slopes closing and into the early evening, expect a reasonably hefty fare despite the seemingly brief journey. Late night taxis virtually non existent. Even pre booking will be difficult.

The Super Morzine takes you up to a really rather boring traverse over to Avoriaz (Super Morzine gondola -> Zore chair -> stand-and-glide blue -> Proclou chair to Avoriaz). There are a couple of nice warm-up blues under the Zore chair lift though with the only narrow parts being right at the bottom to get back on the Zore chair/pop in to the cat bar, well worth a stop for a quick drink before taking the Super Morzine back down at the end of the day.
Morzine isn't that big and if you don't want the traverse it's only a 5 minute walk from the bottom of the Suport Morzine to the Pleney, passing stops for the free busses that will take you to Ardent and Prodains gondolas on the way. You can even skip the walk by taking the free mini road train - but unless it's there when you arrive you'll probably spend longer waiting for it that it would have taken you to walk (in ski boots).
The only thing to watch if you're Super Morzine side is the bridge. There's a good chance you'll be on 'the other side of the river' so have* to cross the pedestrian suspension bridge. It's fine, but not great if you;re scared of hights and can get a bit of a sway on!
*You don't HAVE to use the bridge but it's a lot quicker that walking round the road, past I think the mayors office/chemist/Robinson's bar.
