Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Norway Summer Skiing

Has anyone had any experience in summer skiing here?

We've just booked flights in and out of Oslo in August, and though I know it will be very small scale, I'd love to get a day of summer skiing in. We will have my step daughter, who is learning to ski here now (15 years old), and it would be her first time on snow, and my husband, who is a complete beginner, but I could get him a block of courses at our local ski club before.

I've been reading up a bit, but we'd be travelling with hand luggage only, so would need to hire everything (skis, boots, helmets and poles). I'd probably be able to pack some shell bottoms, and we'd already have a jacket with us as it's not the warmest of destinations for a holiday. Is it do-able? Is there a "better" destination of the 3 ski resorts?

The getting to and from the mountains would be part of the adventure, sight seeing on the way. We'll have a hire car.

Excited, even a few hours summer skiing would be fab!

What a way to make me smile! Love the video. I'll look at Stryn, and see how far from Oslo.

Aha, just spotted this on Stryn website:
We try to keep open as long as we can, but the season usually ends mid july.

So that helps cut down! We will be there Aug 15th -19th

@micheleperry, nothing near Oslo unfortunately. But I'd love to be proved wrong. Here is a thread about Fonna glacier. You need to go from Bergen.

Hi materpiece, we'll have a car, so the holiday will be a mini roadtrip - I'm thinking maybe this place, as it's the highest of 3 summer resorts:
Galdhøpiggen Summer Ski Centre, which has a mle of runs, so not much, but enough to get my other half and step daughter into the ski bug (at the moment it's just me who's a skiier).

So anyone been here in August?

Sorry, not been to Galdhøpiggen. 5 hours from Oslo, but as Scandinavia's highest mountain I'm sure it will be fantastic. You've got me thinking Smile

If you call them I'm sure they'd be really helpful. If you go be sure to drive further west to the fjords. It's stunning everywhere you look.

Not been but looks interesting although that's a heck of a long drive for a day or two skiing on a 2km slope with one lift!

Of the Norwegian resorts I had been looking at the equipment rental always seemed high but hope that's not unexpected and doesnt put you off.

@micheleperry, yes we had a go at the Fonna ski area about 10 years ago. We were doing a general sightseeing roadtrip all around Norway and fancied giving it a go.

First off it was a slightly hairy drive along a very winding single track road with only occasional passing points, when we got there found it was really very small and it was raining on arrival! Given the conditions we hired skis for just a couple of hours and was glad we did as a) the weather was miserable and b) the skiing was tiny and a lot of it seemed to be on barely covered (if at all) glacial ice, good for testing your edges!!

Would I recommend it... if nearby anyway worth it but don't think of it as skiing as you know it, it's not like the Matterhorn or Saas Fee summer ski areas. It was a laugh and we enjoyed ourselves for the experience and scenery (especially when the weather cleared up on our drive back down) but I wouldn't go out of your way in the hope of decent skiing - though maybe we got a bad year, who knows.

Oh and yes, everything in Norway was eye watteringly expensive but we loved it.
