Early reports suggesting another big avi in Tignes with "lots of people buried" Looks like it's come across a piste

The Grande Balme slipped and came all the way onto the piste, having traversed the narrow plain and the bumps inbetween.

The weather is too bad to use helicopters and rescuers are having to drive there. Horrendous.

Jeez. Sounds horrible. Think the report says it was the only lift open in the resort so it's where pretty much everyone who was skiing would have been at some point. Fingers crossed it was empty...

BBC news have just said again (as per above) that it seems no-one was caught up as the avalanche spread across the blue piste, rather than straight down. Fingers crossed that's correct; no helicopters can take off as the visibility is so poor

You know it makes sense.

Local papers reporting that the resort has said no one was killed, just a few people blown over by the 'aerosol' which I am interpreting as the pressure wave ahead of the sklip

It happened at top of Tichot lift. I was at bottom but my wife got caught up in it. Shes ok but is shaken a bit. She was having a lesson with an instructor as its only her second year skiing. When she got down she was panicking about me as i normally do off piste. Im hoping its not done her confidence in.
Anyway its all over now. The speed of everyone from normal skiers to instructors and patrol was impressive. Literally everyone was at the scene in under 5 mins. Very profesional.
I was on the same slope yesterday and was knocked off my feet with 5 other skiers by a sudden gust of snow. The conditions here are extreme. One guy i was talking to who lives here said he hasn't seen snow like this in 7 years. Yesterday and today weve only had about 3 lifts open. They are all closed again now.
On a final note which kinds of gives a smile, i saw a rescue dog run from the top of the slope to the bottom. Jeese it was faster than any skier or snowboarder and was well enjoying himself.

Thread drift, but I notice that in the BBC report they mention the earlier avalanche.
"Last month four snowboarders were killed when an avalanche hit an off-piste area of the same resort. Tignes said that it appeared to have been set off by a group of skiers higher up."
Is that just terrible BBC reporting, or do they actually think it was set off above the group that was caught?

Glad too here you are ok. Was watching the drama unfold from the bottom of the tichot and as you said the speed of people arriving to help was amazing. Make you very humble when you see people from all walks of life rushing to help.

@flaming, I have sent them 3 messages via the contact page and a text to try and get this sorted and offered to put them right on this and other factual inaccuracies, but it seems they just like perpetuating the myth.
@Ultra, A baptism of fire to snowHeads! Glad everyone is OK, hopefully your next and subsequent posts won't be so dramatic.

Thanks for the welcome and kind words. I dont post obviously but i do read all the great threads.
We came to Tignes not just for the skiing but for the SFR freestyle ski show as well. Its supposed to be tonight but something is telling me its going to be cancelled or postponed. I hope not.
Its unreal now. A lot of people are shook up. My wife is shaking. Im shaking too but i think that the tignes nightlife may have something to do with that. Many people are having a beer now and although its snowing still tge sun has finally come out and its starting to look like a nice day.
Hopefully tomorrow the conditions change. I really want to do the la face olympic black run down to val disere. Get to the top of the grande motte again for its amazing views.....oh and of course la flolie douce

I just got this from a friend (not the person wrote it it).
I am stunned that a guide would be taking people off piste in those conditions this morning.
Lost for words.

knowing that piste quite well, I suspect by "off piste" they were just off to the left (looking down) between it and Tichot, not exactly what you would describe as back country. AIUI only Tichot was open. Not much scope for getting into mischief
