Poster: A snowHead

Hey Snowheads!
I'm thinking of going to chamonix next weekend for a short ski break but don't have a car...from your experiences will it be an issue? I hear that ideally you need a car to be able to drive around and public transport isn't great?
I'm also going solo....is it generally a good atmosphere?

@mojitogirl, where are you staying? as that makes a bit of a difference.
Many of our clients don't have cars and seem to cope. (We have 3 apartments, and have run them for 11 years).
I would have no problem hanging out in Cham on my own: Pub, Monkey, Munster, all very Brit oriented bars and if you are happy talking to strangers, you'll find strangers happy talking to you.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@under a new name, I was thinking of either staying at:
1) Chamonix Lodge - ski lifts to Aiguille du Midi are just 0.6 miles away...not sure how close it is to the centre though?
2) RockyPop Hotel (Portes de Chamonix) - this seems quite far from the ski lift though..
Which would you recommend?
It's difficult to find accommodation near the centre so last minute

@mojitogirl, rocky pop looks fun but is far from anything.
The Aiguille du Midi is not the main skiing! If you can, You want to be close to the Brevent really. Or look in Argentiere for the Grands Montets.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@mojitogirl, which part of Chamonix are your group lessons run out of? The buses work fine, but check out the timetable for your accommodation to where you need to be for the lessons.

@mojitogirl, I've been there loads without a car. As long as you're close to a bus stop, or the ski area you want, no issue. The public transport is very good. I even have friends who have cars there, but still hop on the buses - they're free, so why waste petrol!? (I've done the same myself when I lived there, unless I had a full car).
Best idea is to decide where you want to ski, or party, first.
I normally stay in Chamonix Sud (beside Aiguille du Midi lift) - there's a bus stop right there, plus loads of bars including the social ones @under a new name mentioned (and lots of my friends live there). Near Brevent is also a good shout - walkable to the lifts, and to the centre.
Rockypop is probably fine if you only want to ski Les Houches - they do seem to have a good in-hotel social scene. But I'd personally find only skiing Les Houches a bit limiting.
Chamonix Lodge - no. Too far away from the main areas, both bars and bus stops. You can find much more convenient than that.

Btw, have you thought about a room in an airbnb house? There are quite a few hosts in the valley, and that would certainly help you meet people. One of my friends rents out rooms/couch, and goes out of her way to get people socialising. I've just come back from Chamonix and have been partying (and some skiing!) with a few of her guests over the past 10 days

@fixx, I am looking at air bnb a right now actually as hotel accommodation is too expensive due to it being last minute!
I want to an experience exactly like yours !!
I need to call the company who runs the lessons tomorrow (evolution ski) to find out where exactly they run the lessons from.
Hopefully I can find an Airbnb alternatively I may have to look at coumayuer !
