Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austrian/Swiss alternative to Oberlech for family trip for next year

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just back from Stuben and on a complete downer Sad so starting to look at next years family trip which I think will be on 2nd January. Looks like I'll be booking up my boys trip to St Anton too for late Feb/early March Smile I therefore do not feel the need to take wife and kids to Mooserwirtland.

Resorts I've considered in past are Samnaun, Kappl, Serfaus and Obergurgl for our family trip. Ideally want to find 4 star hotel, close to slopes and ski school. My kids are 5 8 and 11 just now with only the youngest going into ski school. Absolutely love Oberlech but I'm being a wee bit cautious financially just now so Oberlech will probably be over budget. Not interested in apartments or B&B for family trip (no problem for boys trip) and would want swimming pool.

Have looked at Edelweiss & Gurgl in Obergurgl but price is on a par with Oberlech. Would like to try Switzerland or even Dolomites. Tend to book independently as we find UK tour ops simply do not cater for a family of 5.

Would go back to hotel we stayed at in Stuben in a minute as we found it excellent value for the Arlberg region but as it looks like I'll be off to St Anton with boys next year I would like a change

Any suggestions?

Silvretta Park hotel in Klosters is very good with kids, has a lovely pool/spa centre and is a 4* hotel - www.silvretta.ch

There are a variety of ski schools in town, the Klosters ski school www.sssk.ch has a reception in the hotel itself, and the Saas ski school www.sss-saas.ch has an office less than 5 minutes walk away in the nearest ski hire shop, Gotschna sport. Both will pick up your children from reception/the boot room of the hotel if needed.

The night life isn't very happening, but its a gorgeous town with a massive ski area which includes Davos.

boabski,
I have stayed in Samnaun and enjoyed it, but for your criteria I would have major reservations. The area where most of the hotels are is a bit of a soulless mixture of shops and hotels and the lift departure point is further down the valley. It is also fairly steep sided and probably a bit bleak in early January. There are some nicer bits a little further dow the valley but they are just as inconveneint and have no 4* hotels.

Kappl village is also in the shade in January only bits of it are appealing some of it is a bit of a road side straggle and it is nothing like Oberlech. The lift departure point is not convenient for the hotels. The slopes are sunny and great for kids though, but nothing like as extensive as the Lech /Zurs area unless you take the bus to Ischgl which may be difficult with kid/kids at ski school.

Never been to Serfaus or Obergurgl, personally the height of the latter would put me off going at the beginning of January with young children, I would have thought it could be bloody cold in bad weather.

Beginnig of January should be very low season, I would be incllined to wait and see where the snow falls and if there is decent early season snow in some of the lower resorts like Saalbach go for one of them.

If you feel that you need to book early for the best places it might be worth looking at Flims/Laax which has a great ski area with a mixture of low altitude tree lines stuff if the weather is bad and high altitude stuff if there is poor snow low down. Went there years ago with young children and they really enjoyed it.

In these low season weeks it is often worth looking out for packages provided by the hotels where things like lift passes are included.

boabski, Enjoyed Saalbach this year, and Ischgl last. Hotels excellent but Ischgls probably closer to Oberlech in price. Skiing was great at both resorts. Wouldn't recommend Wengen. (although many might disagree with me) snowHead

T Bar, Axsman, Great folks, forgot about Saalbach - would love to try it. Also is there any hotels you could recommend in Films/Laax - ideally want something that is close to slope or ski school

boabski, In Saalbach we stayed at the Bergers Sporthotel which was comfortable, centrally located, served good food and was reasonably priced. Other hotels around looked equally good though. The Bergers did have a pool which might be a consideration for the kids.

In Ischgl we stayed at the Hotel Solaria which was very nice but not cheap, and a slightly longer walk to the lifts.

Would rate both highly and would stay in either again. snowHead

Haven't been to Films/Laax.

boabski,
Flims was one of my relatively rare family hotel holidays but I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the hotel. Although pleasant it was also a fair bit from the lifts and did not have a pool.
You could try asking engch who knows the area well.

There are 2 4* hotels at the base station in Laax Murschetg, the Laaxerhof (www.laaxerhof.ch) and the Signina (www.signinahotel.com), both have pools/wellness areas and both do packages. IIRC Cathy stayed in the Signina last year. By next season all the building work in the area should be complete so there should be a few more facilities in the centre. Walk to the lift and ski school from each hotel is about 150m. Free shuttle bus to Flims and to Laax village if you wanted to look around at all

boabski, We've stayed at the Eidelweiss and Gurgl twice and it's a really nice hotel. We went to Ischgl this year and that is a great ski resort too - lovely long runs, although the majority are red runs. We stayed in the Brigitte which was fairly expensive but the service/food wasn't as good as in Lech. In good snow conditions, I really like the skiing in Morzine/Avoriaz. The Chatel area is particularly pretty. Catered chalets (imo) are better than the hotels in PdS. I've been to Saalbach once - really nice too.
Next on my list has to be Zermatt and the Dolomites. Let us know where you decide on.

We stayed at the Silvretta Park hotel in Klosters for Xmas 08. Excellent hotel, suited us perfectly as a family with a 5 and 2yo, we had a two bed/two bath family suite with a kitchenette. Lovely traditional village and picturesque area, short walk (uphill, but not taxing) to the Gondola and easy to get to from Zurich. Great ski area, something for everyone (Madrisa was wonderful for my 5yo's first time on the slopes) and good transport links between the areas via gondala's, train or buses. Its also directly opposite the Park where theres a ice rink, playground and langlauf trails. The Hotel also has a small bowling alley and a spa, hot tub and pool.

hi the laax flims ski area is really nice had a great trip. The hotels mentioned are very proximate to lifts. the laaxerhof looked the nicer of the two. flims appears to have lots of hotels through the whole range of prices. flims is quite spread out but more ski shops. Int erms of price if the excvhange rates were favorable i would say relatively cheap resort (beer typically 6.5chf for a large beer. not so good on current exchange rates)

A plus point maybe one of our group went in to ski school with typical class sizes of 3-5 people albeit not always conducted in english. however she found the quality of instruction very good. slightly odd arrangement for ski school starting at 0945 and running for about 4 hours with an hour off in the middle for lunch and not running on sunday

@boabski, Hi - I know this is old thread - but we are in same position now as you were. 2 girls (6, 10) skied once at Oberlech (The Burg) and wanted somewhere in Jan that was equally as good and convenient for the kids. Where did you end up going?? Advice would be appreciated! (We are going for 2 weeks so are going to go back to Oberlech for one of the weeks - we are coming from Sydney so have to make the most of it!) Thanks

@susan72, think we ended up going to Kappl 2 years running (credit crunch messed things up Very Happy )
Lucky you going back to Oberlech - really is a very special place.
Our kids are great skiers now but are heading back to Kappl again this year as my daughter is bringing along her beginner pal. Went to Hinterglemm and Saalbach the last 2 years which was excellent. We like Kappl for the quiet slopes and the fact that the runs all meet either mid station or valley floor.

I can thoroughly recommend the Hotel Post in Saalbach. Just behind Berger's so equally central and proper a la carte dining instead of buffets (which are a pet hate of mine).

@PeteMan, Agree with Buffets - hate the too! Don't mind breakfast but not dinner especially with kids... Will look at Saalbach. Thinking Obertauren (as ski in ski out) and Serfaus - but at early stages of research. Nice hotel is as important to me as the ski slopes - its the whole package Im after! Not fussy at all! Klosters still on list - but finding nice hotel near slopes.....And now Alpbach is on Radar too. Better get googling again! Thanks.

@susan72, my mate went to Obertauren and did not rate it - I tend to agree with his judgement on things. Serfaus looks great but have not been yet. If looking at Saalbach/Hinterglemm, we preferred Hinterglemm (just) over Saalbach. Many people prefer Saalbach over Hinterglemm. I love the gradient of slopes around that area and all tree lined too, which means better vis in snow storms.

Sorry susan I was referring to boabski - I wasn't clear.

As an aside what's skiing in Victoria like? We looked at Mount Buller when we visited Melbourne, but couldn't make it fit with our schedule unfortunately.

All booked and paid for obertauern, so am hoping it's ok boabski!
