Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to go March 4th - France or Austria ?

Some advice needed on a last minute trip I'm booking. We normally go to Les Arcs as a family at Easter, but this year it's just me and my wife (eldest's GCSE year, so they're being palmed off for some 'quality time' with the in-laws).

We're both happy on reds and push ourselves to improve on blacks, and generally like the variety of bigger ski areas - though probably the reality is we end up doing the same old 10-12 runs. I went with friends to St Anton a few weeks ago, but would be quite keen on Austria again as we've done France for the last few years - I've been eyeing up Ski Welt (Soll or Westendorf).

My concern, like everyone else, is the way the snow is heading - it was pretty decent in St A., but I obviously want to minimize my risks - but I'm also looking to book now, rather than go truly last minute, as we want to be sure to get a decent hotel.

Soooo - assuming the conditions don't come good in the next couple of weeks, how would the snow in Ski Welt likely stack up compared to some of the higher French resorts (thinking EK/Flaine/3V, none of which I've been to) - I'm not familiar with the lower Austrian resorts, so is there much more risk we'd end up in slush-fest, or does the more eastern location compensate enough ? In my situation would you think it worth the risk for the sake of variety, or play it safe and go 'snow-sure' ?

Appreciate this is a crystal-ball job (and the latest outlook for end of next week has some snow in it), but I'd rather not be in a bar all afternoon listening to sodding 'Jonny Dap' when I could have been enjoying 'Le Piste' elsewhere.

I'm sure he is - I love Austria and really enjoyed St A and the whole vibe (ok I admit it - Jonny Dap is actually a guilty pleasure, at least it was in the Mooswirt). But for all that, the snow is the biggest priority for me, hence the question. Currently leaning towards EK, if I'm honest. Just looking to be persuaded otherwise.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Pejoli, it is too much of a crystal ball. I am expecting great conditions all day from mid station up in Flachau, a bit soft at the bottom before lunch, and about 2pm it might get slushy ....or it could dump down and be -5

@Pejoli, saalbach/Hinterglemm. Big area, pretty snow sure, fantastic lift system, great apres, just over an hour transfer. skiing on both sides of the valley, so North in the PM if it's getting slushy. France is good for massive ski areas, but Austria as an all round destination IMO is better by some way.

Thanks everyone, had a long hard think about it, but I'm afraid the altitude won out, and I've decided to stick with France - I've booked with Mark Warner in Val D.

Next year Austria though!
