I might be jumping the gun but I've started looking at hotels for a couple of trips in Jan and March 2024 and I'm struck by how many are coming up as not available, I've played around with dates and length of trips to see if I was just choosing very popular times.
Do hotels tend to open winter bookings later on or have I missed the boat for 2024 for direct bookings? There's plenty of package and apartments available for when I'm looking for. I normally book trips in September and not come across this before.
Looking at Italy and Austria.

@TomBH, have you emailed the ones you want in particular? My Jan 24 trip to Austria is already booked directly but there are many other hotels and apartments I have received quotes from. I was looking around the Dolomites, Saalbach and Ski Amade in particular but settled on Flachau. The Flachau and Saalbach tourist office booking pages were also fairly well populated with availability

@TomBH, a few I have stayed in before have not appeared on hotels or Booking dot com but are available on the hotels own website. Worth while looking on their website if you haven’t already.

Thanks, both. Ones I've looked at so far also have their own websites showing as not available. Highly likely to book a return to Saalbach as a package deal for March (it's just two of us so tends to work out best price wise) but the Janaury trip tends to be a DIY try somewhere new as there's more of us.
I'll pick a few for a shortlist and email them direct as it sounds like I'm early rather than I've missed out.

@TomBH, noticied quite a few on Sunweb still saying prices not available.
Lots are up now on there. We had booked somewhere via booking.com as place wasn't coming up that I had been hoping for (wasn't certain it was going to be in budget). It was so now booked and cancelled the other one.

If you find one you really like the look of, why not phone them? I don't know about Austria but I get the impression that Italy is not as completely hooked on email as we are. In France they don't seem to start thinking about the winter till the end of August.

Quick update.
We've booked Corvara in Italy for 4 nights in Janaury. Found a decent hotel happy to take a half week booking from the Wednesday.
Did have to email them directly but all good.
