Poster: A snowHead

Totally gutted. Have a hairline fracture of scaphoid in a splint.
Off to see the Otho's Monday in fracture clinic.
Quite a competent skier. Skied for nearly 20 years, can manage my way down any pistes and some off piste.
Sensible skier. Not bothered about speed.
Questions: has anyone skiied with this injury?
Would I get insured or could they refuse?
I am in a splint until Monday but thinking of asking for a cast to totally stabilise bone. I can ski without poles.
Gutted as we have saved up all year!
We are going on 2 hols, le plagne and then st anton. Would kill me to have to sit it out!
Cheers

I suspect, reading your post above, that you can ski at a reduced (compared to normal) speed at which you KNOW you won't fall over. If you are happy with that speed you'll be fine.
Not sure about insurance.
(Fractured my scaphoid and ulna stylus etc last April)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

OK, in general you need two legs to ski. Arms are useful but not essential. I have skied twice for a week each with shoulder injuries strapped inside my jacket. Persoanlly I see little difference between skiing on unmoguled slopes and walking. You just stand there and move from edge to edge. One pole is fine for most gentle skking.
If you are worried about insurance take out Carre Neige

@heidi1, Probably yes but only you can decide. If you have travel insurance then you should maybe let them know this?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ask both your doctor and insurance. I fractured my scaphoid a few years ago and was immediately told in resort not to ski which I didn't do but from a simple # have been left with lots of problems with pain. Take advice from the experts

The doctor who splinted my wrist and hand in France when I had the same told me I was fine to ski, but not to use the strap on my pole.

Falling and then rolling over my pole resulted in the strap breaking my wrist.

Yes, you are a good skier so will be fine. What's the alternative? Stay at home and be miserable!

@sequoiaboard, Straps are meant to release if worn correctly, but can easily see how that happened. I skied after the incident mostly without poles. It was quite good to go back to basics and there was no way I could do anything steep that required poles for the rest of the time on the slopes anyway.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I skied 4 weeks after fracturing my thumb pretty bad. Insurance were chilled out when I rang them - "you can pay us £20 more to be insured for your thumb, or you can be covered for everything but your thumb with no issue"
My insurance was through my bank acc (and it was 5 years ago).

Are they? How? I dont use wrist straps at all to avoid the problem. Its not a big deal if i drop a pole....i can ski without poles where and how i ski

You know it makes sense.

I broke my scaphoid and radius this summer, I'd still have skied if i'd already paid for a holiday (but I wouldn't even consider taking a pole in the knackered hand). Just be careful not to land on your wounded hand/wrist.
As above, have a nice relaxing holiday cruising around instead of hitting mach 10 and jumping off cliffs, and you'll be grand!
Enjoy (and heal fast)
