I injured my knee badly last year, tearing ACL, cracking tibia and damaging medial cartilage (already damaged from years ago). I am going skiing again very soon and have been building up the muscles around the joint through gym work. However, I feel I need a support or brace of some sort to give me stability and assurance. I have visited Vulkan, McDavid and Mueller sites and been overwhelmed by the range. Do I need one with a brace or will that reduce my movement? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Have you been seeing a physio? If so, I'd speak to them.
They advised me to go with a hinged brace to help protect the knee.

Thanks. Physio suggested good support as well as muscle build-up. When I look at good supports, I see so many. Not sure if hinged support will affect knee flexibility

I am using a hinged knee-brace by a company called Push - you can get it on-line from PhysioSport.co.uk. It is a clever bit of kit, leaf-spring rather than a hinge. It made my medial ligament injury stable and I am well on the way to recovery.
BTW I accessed Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy to accellerate the healing process - my local Multiple Sclerosis society have one so I could also support a good charity by making a contribution for the treatment.

After many years of skiing on weakened knees ( lesson: don't compete in moguls as a teenager) I regularly rely on dual spine knee braces. These have 2 springy spines on eiher side of the compression elasitcated band. These are what is recommended for MCL and LCL injuries as a starting point.
With your ACL, you should look at the McDavid 426, (£30 on eBay) or the 429 ( £ 45) both of which would suit a minor to moderate ACL injury, or the 427 (£65) which would suit moderate to more severe injuries, particularly those requiring restriction of flextion of the joint, which, as you say you are at the gym etc, you wouldn't need.
So check out the 426 and 429...

Hi, my first post on here so hopefully somebody finds this useful. Have found some good posts on here so far, great forum!
I have tried numerous knee braces and you will not beat these guys products, loads of pro sports men and women use them in the US. Pretty pricey over here but I got them for 1/3 of the price in the US and had my brother bring them over. If you can do something similar you will save a fortune.

Thanks for the info on different knee braces. I've got a patella that likes popping out and back in on occassion (subluxation) and have had surgery a few times. Most recently (6 years) it was an ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendon graft. It's an improvement on what I had previously and does stop the subluxation which is very good. I've already got a hinged knee brace by McDavid which does the job but is bulky and I'll definitely be having a look at the wraparound supports mentioned on snowheads. To get round the heat rashes with neoprene, I'll often put tubigrip under the support to stop this. It allows less breathing but stops the heat rash...

I've been amazed at how good the braces from these guys, though not cheap they do give support and build confidence
www.ossur.co.uk do some and I have one (CTi® OTS Knee Brace ). Made a huge difference this year - managed 9 days of skiing and even did a lesson in powder, they have clinics round the county . can also try http://www.technologyinmotion.com/ too
have used the neoprene knee brace ones too but this gave a lot more support

If I were you I would give the Physio a call back and see if they have any specific suggestions. As you said there are so many types out there and they really have firsthand experience with your knee injury. Getting the wrong brace could really do more harm than good so it's definitely something to be careful with choosing. Main suggestions would be to keep up with your knee exercises even if you're feeling better as it really helps to support the knee. I've had trouble with my knees as well but they have been a lot better since I started doing the hip exercises my physio recommended for me.
