Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Survey on ski-tourers habits

Hello,

Currently students, we are writing our Master's thesis in the field of winter sports, especially ski touring.

We would like to analyse the behaviour of ski-tourers and what's their perception about protection and security in their sport activities.

That is why we would like to gather your point of view about the subject.

We thank you in advance for your generous help and we explicitly assure you that all data recorded in the following survey will be kept strictly confidential.

Hmmm, talks about protection and security, asks if I wear a helmet ski touring - I don't, then asks lots of questions about helmets! And none about transceivers, ropework, airbags, avalanche training etc.

Thank you all for taking part in this research. We already gathered a lot of information about the other types of protection during our Master, that's why we are focusing on the helmet now.

I'd be interested to know how general responses to this work pan out once it is completed. The use of a helmet on multi day ski tours seems to split opinion, with weight / space considerations for the skin often trumping safety considerations for the downhill (including mountain guides / guided parties).

off piste ski touring - now that's a new term. All ski touring used to be "off piste", that was the idea but now more and more people are going up the side of ski runs on their touring kit. They say its new tourers who are doing this, people who have converted from downhill skiing and of course there is the 'trail/skimo' crowd.

If you take first lift in the US you can often find locals skinning up for their morning "jog" lap. There is definitely a fitness crowd angle.

@davidof, A lot of people do that here for fitness training too. Unfortunately there is not enough snow on the forest trails for touring at the moment around the Amade region. Going up the side of the piste late afternoon for an hour is a damn good workout.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

you see a fair amount of that in Les Contamines - good alternative to going for a run when there is snow in the village

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
