Poster: A snowHead
|
I've got a few holidays booked this year and have booked my skis in for a full grind and service at a local shop.
What I'm looking for is a convenient way to give the ski edges a quick sharpen every few days (or as they start struggling to hold an edge)!
Are the pocket tools worth the time or am I better buying a selection of files, guide and clamp?
Thanks

I use this type https://skiexchange.co.uk/products/edge-tuner although an older version, and find it very good.
There is of course a varying opinion of these type things, and so will provide background for my view and why I find it good.
From being professionally trained in metalwork, some time ago, I may use it differently to how some experience it. I use files in this to take any cuts I want, it does need high hand pressure to fully utilise a file's capacity to cut the steel edge, over and above that which people envisage.
With a single cut file tooth ( known as "single cut b'stard" blade) it will clean both edges and cut the side material in one pass if needed.
I set the ski down on it's side to enable pressure to be applied downward in producing that cut.
This may not be suitable for some, but it does cut accurately to give very good edges with, I feel, ease and convenience.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I also use this and it's great, very simple and nice in the hand too. Get 2 or 3 grades of files and you'll wonder why you paid for an edge job. Additionally, I have a holmenkol base file guide which is also excellent.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Did you tell the ski shop what base and side edge angles to use? If not, they’ll most likely use whatever their machine is set at and bug up your factory settings (if not already buggered by previous services). Check your skis vs thepisteoffice list and tell them what you want.
Also, if they have already been edged many times ask whether they need to remove any sidewall material to get the angle you want. If they don’t know what you’re talking about, take the skis back from them and get someone who knows to do it properly.

Thanks for all the input, I'll stick the edge tuner on the Xmas list!
Yeah I've asked for specific angles on the edge and base for both sets of skis. I'll try asking about sidewall removal and gauge his response.... Good tip

Yes, very successful for me but put the caveat about use as some may find it awkward.
The advice also to look at The Piste Office is good too. Good equipment and expertise from there to follow and gain experience.

@tomb, shouldn't need to change the base. What side angle did you request?
I do a 3 degree edge on the family's skis. As mentioned above sidewall needs to be taken back sometimes.
If not holding an edge could be down to either.
Personally I don't have a pocket tool but service after every weeks skiing.

I'm getting a full grind as the base in slightly concave.
Requested 3 degree also.
