I've seen comments on SCGB that ESF in Courcheval gets a crap write up.
ESF in La Rosiere last Feb ½ term were also crap. Anyone agree with that ?
What alternatives are there at Courcheval ? (Staying in La Praz? 1350)

Most of the above being British ski schools, by the way.
I've heard good and bad about the ESF there - and had a pretty 'average' experience of ESF at Courchevel 1800 myself. Haven't tried any on the list.

Haven't used ESF in Courchevel, but I have used Mountain Masters there this year. Excellent tuition - I had two different instructors, both of whom were very good. Top of the tree in my experience was Anthoni Pilarski - top bloke.
Edit: I had clearly been on the vino when I wrote this, since Mountain Masters are based in Val d. What I meant to say was I'd used New Gen (recommended by MM) and would highly recommend them.
Highly recommended - just make sure you save up!

We stayed in Le Praz last year, and used New Gen for a private lesson. They only had availability based over in 1650, which was a bit of a trek, but they were very good.

Used ESF in C1650 in Jan 04 & they were poor for Deb & average for me.
We went back to C1650 in March 04 & swapped to New Gen (by recommendation) & they were excellent.
We've just come back from a Warren Smith course & we didn't need to 'unlearn' anything previously taught by New Gen, so I think that's a good testimonial.
You can get the free bus upto 1550 & then take the bubble upto 1850 to the New Gen meeting point or it's probably easier to stay on the bus & go to their 1650 office.
Just remember to book early to guarantee a place.

We used ski academy (4 seperate instructors) 1850 and they were all first class. They were also a great wedge of dosh cheaper than New Gen!

Yes I'd recommend it as classes are limited to a max of 8 people (?). They offer a choice of start times although the 9.15am start time always gets booked up first as it leaves you with the rest of the day free.
You can book online. Their web site also gives a good description of the different class ability levels although they do swap people around to suit etc.
In addition to lessons to cover all abilities, they also offer specialist classes.

The Deputy Director of ESF in La Ros is English and having met him, I'd be surprised if he wouldn't be disappointed if anyone found them wanting in the resort.
I used Evolution2 when there after good experiences elsewhere and I wasn't impressed too much. I suppose it really comes down to the luck of the draw sometimes.

I'd go for New Generation or Supreme Ski, but then again I'm somewhat biased as when I did the SCGB reps course we had one of the directors of Supreme Ski training us, and now I'm a New Gen ISIA trainee. Having said that New Gen got European Ski School of the Year

I think it doesn't matter what ski school you choose - you can get good or not so good instruction at any of them. One reason why I refuse to become one! I know people happy or not with all the above.

I've looked at the various ski schools above and I'm surprised by the big variation in prices eg. Children's lessons/ 5 days range from €160 to €230. By comparison similar lessons with Arc Aventures were approx €130. Is Courchevel really that much pricier for everything?

Have only stayed in Chalets in 1650 on excellent lastminute.com deals but didn't think the 'apres ski' in town to be expensive. Have friends who went to 1550 this year (we're going there in Jan 05) & prices seemed similar. 1850 is apparently the pricey resort - have only bought drinks there & it was noticably more expensive than 1650.
New Gens tuition rates are the same in both resorts.

My wife had beginners lessons with ESF at Val d'Isere (not Courchavel but I figured people reading this may be interested  )
She really didn't like it at all.
On her 3rd day I happened upon the group on the slope and the instructor was just ignoring the 3 ladies/girls at the back. They said hello to me and by the time they'd turned around the instructor was out of sight and - trust me - they weren't just dawdling and nattering!
Apparently she'd had a couple of the women in tears and generally been pretty damned unpleasant.
I'm no expert skier (I can manage a red) but I took Denise and her friend out for the rest of the day and with a bit of friendly encouragement I had them both *way* beyond the level the ESF managed.
I think beginners benefit hugely from instruction - but that ESF woman wants shooting!

Sarge, In what way were ESF "crap" in La Ros? We used them for our children just before half term this year and they were excellent.
