Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
Hi,
I am going to Grandvalria in Jan with the family. It appears to be a good family resort the questions (not very challenging terrain I have heard).
The appears to be some off-piste opportunities is there anyone who does guiding in the area?
Are there any resorts which are close with more challenging terrain ?
Ordino-Arcalís looks doable for a day trip how do I get there?
Thanks.

Some of the best off piste I have done and some of the deepest powder. No one really goes off piste so you'll find vast hill sides of untracked powder.
The equinox storms in March can give a metre of snow over one night! March has previously been the best month for snow.
Lots of guides to go out with.
Soldeu is probably the best resort for a family.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm sure there must be some guides, and one of the ski schools does off-piste classes so they can probably help you. There is indeed a variety of off-piste, some of which is marked on the map as itineraries and plenty of other options are visible from the lifts. The usual rules apply, of course. (There was a side-of-closed-piste avalanche death just a couple of seasons ago, sadly.)
Soldeu in particular has some nice black pistes, particularly those at the top, although that area is often closed after snowfall because it's sketchy (it's where that avalanche happened.) Other nice runs are in Canillo and Montmalús (Grau Roig).
Arcalís is lovely but only worth the effort of getting there if it's a powder day. Take the public bus to La Vella and change for La Massana, and then the Vallnord ski bus up to the resort.
