Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

First avalanche death of the season — no beacon.

Sad to hear of the first avalanche death of the season in Hintertux. And the guy wasn't even wearing an avalanche beacon. Sad

Also they were climbers rather than skiers I think.

Although to be fair to Morris, he has that paragraph pasted into every post. At least he is doing something to raise avalanche awareness, and always provides cautionary notes to people chasing powder.

They were only just a few meters off to the side of some main trails. Very unlucky.

Read the link (and see above from @clarky999).
No biggy, I just think that including an ad in the copy of the article is a little tasteless, rather than popping a banner or something else on the page.

Might be perceived as tasteless, but not a bad idea to bone up on avalanche awareness........

I didn't find it tasteless. With that comment I was expecting to see a billboard ad for a transceiver.

@KenX, too right! How about some helpful links to free online sources?
Anyhoo. Let's not hope for any more.

I don't think the ad is tasteless. What maybe is a bit tasteless is the actual quote:

Quote:
The fact that they had to search for hours to find the victim indicates that he wasn't wearing an avalanche beacon.

With an emphasis on the word 'indicates'.

Does this mean that the reporter doesn't actually know whether he was wearing a beacon or not? And is just assuming on the basis that it took a while? If so, there are of course other reasons why he might not have been found... maybe a problem with the beacon? Or a problem with the rescuers' search equipment? Could be any of many reasons why he wasn't found immediately, I think it's a bit unfair to assume it was due to negligence on his part. A bit more respect and a bit less assumption wouldn't go amiss when it's with regards to a fatality.

No adverts for me - get your ad blocker software upgraded?

I assume you're bitching about an add placed by the author in the page, but actually if they use syndication you'd probably see related adverts too, if you don't take other action.

There's nothing in this information to suggest that a transceiver would have made an iota of difference, however. You should ride as if you don't have one.

I also think the use of the word "indicates" is fair. It does indicate that. Would it be any better to say "presumably", "probably", "most likely". You can't write an article with loads of caveats.

@dp, Here is the analysis of the avalanche. It confirms the climber who died was unfortunately not wearing a beacon, and it took the rescue services 2.5 hours to find him.

Hintertux is pretty sketchy for the early season avys isn't it - wasn't a member of the US junior team killed a few years back just off piste? Or was that a crevasse?

Edit: Nope it was Soelden apparently http://alpine.usskiteam.com/news/ski-peace-ronnie-berlack-and-bryce-astle

Pretty much everywhere in Tirol was incredibly sketchy at that time.

Avalanche deaths/accidents up the Ziller valley seem to be extremely rare, or seldom reported.
