 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all, I'm driving down to Tignes with a few pals the weekend of Dec 1st - 5th. This is my first time in Tignes, can anyone give me an idea what to expect so early on. So far I've heard mixed views but booked up none the less! Great to see that there's a Snowheads presence then so would be good to meet up with anyone else who's going.

Welcome to firesnow. Early season is hard to predict but Espace Killy usually delivers with its opening date of last weekend in November.
As a minimum you can expect a vertical descent of 1200m from the top of the glacier back to Tignes Val Claret; but it's probable that there'll be a fair bit more open than that. We've had two or three powder trips at that time of year.

As said it could be great or not so good lower down. At the very least you will have the glacier where you can have some fun but I think you have made a good choice for booking at that time of year.

I'll have been there for a fortnight by then, @mountainaddict, is spot on with his summary. The sector down to les Brevieres will not be open. I'll be starting detailed snow reports as soon as I arrive.

Depends what you have in mind firesnow. As mentioned, we've had fantastic powder days in early December - and once on the opening day of Espace Killy on something like 28 November....Massive snowfall overnight (car buried!)...first two off the Tufs lift out of Tignes....nobody behind us....deserted slopes ahead.....untracked powder everywhere.....AAAAAHHHHH! One of our best ever days on the slopes!!
Off piste cover would probably be thin in most places (epic snowfalls as above excepted) - though we once had a fantastic off piste powder morning at that time of year with a guide from Alpine Experience in Val D'Isere. Touring skis/skins would have been handy as we had a fair climb/hike to access the untracked stuff. Still had a great time with normal kit though.
AE are a great set up - group off piste sessions (am or pm) every day of the season at very reasonable cost. Highly recommended.
