Looking for advice. 4 intermediates looking to ski Austria in late Jan 2017 - long blues preferred, decent food and a quiet (ish) resort - a few bars no thing hectic. Ski in Ski our preferred - loved Les Arcs and Madonna di Campiglio.
Any suggestion most gratefully received.
Thanks
Tim

Perhaps somewhere like Gerlos (Zillertal Arena), Dienten (Hochkonig), Katschberg (Lungau). All would give you a reasonable size local ski area with possibility to ski further afield, all should be snow sure and provide some ski in/out accommodation.

Obergurgl? Even the blacks are easily skiable by middling intermediates there.

Saalbach. Can't remember names, but there's at least one hotel with a lift to/from the piste.

Obertauern - Seems like it's Ski in / Ski out which is pretty rare in Austria, Lots of Blues and Reds, has lively-ish Apres so I'm told.
I can give you first hand experience of Obertauern soon as I head out there tomorrow.
Can say Zell Am See is option too, it's a beautiful town with a reasonable ski area and Kaprun is just next to it also. Not ski in ski out but I really like Zell Am See.

@impingu1984, ski-in/ski-out is possible in every Austrian resort I've been to, you just need to choose accommodation situated by lift stations or on the mountain. Clearly it's more common in a purpose-built resort, but even then not all accommodation will be piste-side. In Austria look for hotels called 'Berghotel' or 'Berggasthof'.
The OP likes Madonna which is not purpose-built and has a high proportion of accommodation that is some distance from the pistes/lifts.

Would second the vote for Schladming. Lots of long cruisey reds and blues. Very doable for middling intermediates. Excellent lift infrastructure. Quiet town, but several nice restaurants.

Saalbach / Hinterglemm - lots of great reds and blues, lots of places very very close to the lifts, Hinterglemm not quite as lively as Saalbach so that might be your thing.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've not been to anywhere in Austria that would be unsuitable for intermediates.

Serfaus, but ski in ski out may not fit.

You know it makes sense.

Obertauern's microclimate tends to make it cloudy and whiteoutey in Jan I think. Obergurgl is a good shout, also Kaprun as a base for itself, Zell and the Kitzteinhorn - some really easy runs at all of those, esp the Kitz, and you can get the gondola down from Zell at close of play if the red feels a bit steep. Hammerite is right, basically!

@davidthornton, Serfaus has ski in if you choose your accommodation carefully but not ski out. Definitely a great intermediate area.
Schladming as suggested above though not ski in ski out. Lots of the Skiwelt area, Ellmau has some slopeside ski in accommodation and another good intermediate area.
Skiwelt and Schladming both have potential advantage of lots if tree skiing in Jan if the weather is bad. Gastein Valley too - you really are spoilt for choice in Austria for good intermediate terrain

I'm not 100% on what OP considers ski in/out. Do they mean next to a lift at the foot of the slopes or accommodation where you can ski immediately from the property without a lift. Just because a resort is classified as ski in/out doesn't mean you won't have a walk to the pistes or lifts. You surely have to look at the individual property and not just the resort to confirm how convenient?

The Alpine Palace in Hinterglemm ticks all these boxes. Get a room in the original "Wolf" wing and you will have a 3 star room (and price) but get the 5 star food and facilities in the remainder of the hotel. The hotel is next door to the Rieterkogel gondola and adjacent piste (50m walk max). If you want to ski on the mountains opposite it's about a 150m walk to the UBahn gondola.

@timmythedog, Saalbach is generally regarded as an intermediate skier's paradise, with lots of itineraries that give you a real sense of travelling around and covering large distances without doing the same piste twice. There are also loads of good, reasonably-priced places to eat both in the village and on the mountains. Ski-in ski-out accommodation is easy to find. Some people may think that it doesn't fit your preference for a quiet(ish) resort, but there is plenty of ski-in ski-out accommodation outside the village centre. Even the village centre can be quiet, as the bars and night clubs tend to be in very well sound-proofed basements. The nightlife is there if you go looking for it, but, if your preference is for peace and quiet, there is plenty of accommodation that would suit. You're very unlikely to be disappointed.

The Berghotel in Zell am see is beautiful and brilliant for ski-in.
I also like OBergurgl - long blue runs - especially on Hoghgurgl side.

Don't exclude the Dolomites. Yes, they are in Italy rather than Austria, but the Suedtirol was part of Austria until 1918. If you are close to the border, the main language is German rather than Italian. The "feel" is very Tirol. Try Sankt Vigilio / Kronplatz. A good self catering spot is www.mareo.it Eating out is cheap. Getting there is the problem. Fly to Innsbruck / Munich / Verona and hire a car
