Poster: A snowHead

I swear, this is my last inane question. At least for today. I think we tipped rather generously the last (and only) time we were in Europe. Wait staff in the USA are paid almost nothing and rely on tips to live, 15% is pretty much expected and 20% common. I've heard 10% is more usual in Europe. Would these be about right?
taxi drivers - 10%?
waitstaff - 10%?
bartenders - 1 Euro for serving a couple of drinks to my wife and I?
How do you tip the staff at the hotel? We're on half board.
Are ski instructors tipped? If so, about how much?
Anyone that I'm missing?
Thanks again.

RISkier, I would advise to stop tipping until you have enough money to buy all the back catalogue of 'Curb your Enthusiasm', then watch every episode back to back and see how Larry David deals with situations like 'Tipping'

RISkier, In my experience folk from your country tend to forget tipping when abroad. Personally Its about 15% for great service, 10 % for good service, 5% for fairly good service, and nothing for anything less. I gave a €20 Euro tip for a 2hr lesson recently because it was so good.

RISkier,
This is how I would approach it as a Brit, tipping isn't so much obligatory as the States might be so you do so if you are pleased with the service. Sometimes genuine thanks yous goes just as far.
You can leave a few euros after an evening with the same bartender but for a round of drinks at the bar, not expected IMV. If the waiter/waitress is particualrly helpful then maybe 10% or lose change, depends how big a deal it all is. Food up the mountains not nessecary unless really pleased/delighted with waitress service. Guides and ski instructors earn tips for a great day out and instructors at the end of a series of lessons if you have really enjoyed the lessons. You will know if a tip is expected by the enjoyment rating throughout the week. Taxis can be tipped and in hotels I leave stuff for the cleaners. The proprietors will probably be more pleased you have enjoyed stay, thanked them profusely/ promise to come back and tipped their staff.

Of course if your on a 'Catered Chalet' holiday tipping becomes the subject of a thread several pages long

I tend to tip 10% across the board in UK/Europe. I don't tip barstaff though, unless drunk, when they are invited to take enough out of my change to get themselves a drink.

10% would be too much in Switzerland, 5% is more than enough here.

I only tip waiter/ess if the service is good and isn't included in the bill. Nothing unless they warrant it. Cleaning staff usually deserve it - never occurred to me to tip a bar person, get them a drink yes, tip, no. From my point of view I don't expect tips and find them rather embarassing. A present, or a voucher from a ski shop is much nicer. Ditto being asked to eat with the clients - very pleasant - everyone happy - no-one embarassed.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Don't usually do tipping, but we had a particularly good rep 2 weeks ago. I tried to buy him a beer, but all he would have was a sparkling water as he was on duty. What a pro

Most places we go to in France have service included, if they don't, it usually says so on the bill.
